1. A nonsensical farrago of words : from ca. 1660; coll. by 1700; S.E. by ca. 1730. Prob. ex. earlier (late C. 16-17 sense, "froth".
   
2. As adulterated wine, late C. 17-18, the term presumably never rose above coll.
