Overview and Information: About This Site

This companion web site for these books is open to the public, meaning that you will not need to remember a password to access the site and that you can find the site from most search engines. The site is designed with close attention to accessibility and usability for the disabled. This means the site attempts to be easy to use for everyone, no matter what browser or computer is being used, or what sort of connection you have for that computer.

The public web site is not intended to provide all of the content in the book, but to make it easier to use the web site addresses (URLs) in the book. You will not find here the discussions of topics, suggestions for searching, search strategies, recommended terms for topics, questions to consider asking, or similar content from the book. You will find the almost eleven thousand web site links from the book in an easy-find, easy-click format, in addition to free samples and information about the print and CD-ROM versions of the book.

Inclusion of a link on this site is not an endorsement of the quality of the site, since the discussion in the book may have either promoted or crticized the link. For that type of information you would need to consult the printed book, as well as for discussion of when best to consult which source, strategies for your own searches, enriched discussion of topics, suggestions of terms, and suggested solutions for commonly encountered problems in searching a given topic. Please note that this is a static web site, specifically to accompany the content printed in the book, and will not be updated to correct links which disappear or change over time. To find a replacement link, please consult the section "404 Fun" in the printed Guide.

People often seek information at two different levels. One, tell me everything I need to know; or two, just give me one quick answer. Because we expect people to use the book for both of these types of searching, the links are organized in two ways.

For the person who is working through a topic in depth, the web site has the links arranged by chapter, with all links from that entire chapter arranged alphabetically on that web page. As you work through that chapter, you can find any link which interests you from any section of the chapter, simply by browsing the alphabetical listing on that one page. For the person who just wants one link, but does not want to type it in or work from the CD-ROM, there is a master alphabetical list provided of all the web sites listed in the book. These are arranged alphabetically, not by the URL or web site address, but by the site description as it was given in the book. See the section "How to Use This Site" for more information.
