Originally, the pictured specimen was identified as Fragilaria leptostauron var. dubia by (Stoermer and Yang 1969) and the following information refers to this taxon. Fragilaria leptostauron var. dubia lacks the expanded central area that is characteristic of the nominate (Patrick and Reimer 1966). The valves have a elliptical-lanceolate shape, although the central area varies in width (Patrick and Reimer 1966)
