Welcome to 1501 Washtenaw…

A few short guidelines on the start of our new era at Beta Tau. We have
spent a lot of time and money preparing this place to be awesome. Please
respect our work and please follow these guidelines. This house could
easily be the nicest house on campus as well as the largest, so do your
part and keep it that way. I know a lot of these things are negative, but
if you try to understand why these precautions are being taken, I think
you will. The amount of work that was required to bring our old house to a
good condition should never have to be done again and if these rules are
followed it won’t. We will not have to have a crew work hundreds of
hours to make the place look good, because it always will be. And besides,
girls like a nice house…
The final fire/city housing inspection will take place Monday morning
at around 9:30. Do not clutter halls or break fire code.
- Do not go out on the roof or fire escape at any time unless there is
an emergency. The by-law will read: "Any member found on the roof
or fire escape absent an emergency situation or fire drill, will be
expelled immediately from the chapter"
- Every outside door must be locked at all times. We have a lot of
valuables just near the main entrance and since the house is larger it
will be harder to hear someone walk out with our stuff.
- No smoking in house. Some of you know what the house looked and
smelled like before, and we don’t want that.
- There will be no parties in the common areas unless permission is
granted from myself. Use your discretion here. I’m not saying you
can’t have people over. I’m not going to be an unfair, I just don’t
want something to happen before we have a solid Risk Management
policy.
- If you store anything in common areas for more than an hour, it can
and will be thrown away.
- Pick up after yourself. Please, I am asking that if everyone does
their part, there will be no need for large house clean-ups.
- Do not park in the front of the house if you can help it.
- If you are interested in a parking spot, talk to Adam Paulsen. He
and the judicial board will be determining the parking spot priority
very soon.
- If there is anything you note about your room or anything that you
feel is inadequate, please let me know immediately, so we won’t get
charged for it when we move out.
- You may paint your room, but understand that it will be expected to
return to a white or off white color before you move out unless the
next tenant agrees with the color. And watch the carpet if you are
going to paint. Any mess will result in a fine.
- Please do not leave toiletries in the bathrooms.
- Please do not use the kitchen. It will remain locked with the only
keys going to Frances, Sordyl, & Kliewer, because they will be in
charge of keeping it clean.
- I have the only Master Key. This should not be an issue, because
almost every room uses a deadbolt system making it nearly impossible
to lock yourself out.
- Be very careful how many electrical items you have in your room
especially on the older/left hand side of the house. The system is not
made to run an air conditioner, refrigerator, TV, Computer, and Stereo
all at the same time. If fuses start blowing, we will have to restrict
use.
- We have mattresses from the old house that people can use. If you do
not get one of those and you would like one, please notify myself and
we may purchase more.
- The University of Michigan DSL Line will be installed on September 5th.
I am working to get the house wired up prior to this date. You must
have a U of M uniqname and password and a 10baseT Ethernet card to use
this. If there is going to be more than one computer in a room, you
will need a hub to split the connection.
- I would recommend setting up your phone line through Ameritech ASAP.
The # is 1-800-244-4444. It usually takes a couple of weeks.
- And lastly, to get your keys you must sign a membership contract and
a Room Evaluation form. See me for those.
Again, I want to say how excited I am to start out this next year in
such an awesome position. I hope you all want to make this house awesome,
because it will be. I will be working through September 1st,
but I can always be reached for any questions.
