Fara-Joseph is a shy little boy who enjoys making toys and hanging out with his friends Aly and Koumba. He wants to become a doctor when he grows up. Sitting together with friends and neighbors around their little radio and listening to news and music is one of the great pleasures of his family's hard life.

Although he is good health and has all of his basic vaccinations, there are still hygiene and sanitation problems. His small home does not have its own latrine, so they have to use a hole in the ground for their needs. In 2000 and 2001, there were a series of rebel incursions due to a major civil war that damaged much of the already fragile infrastructure.
