Guerline is an only child who grew up not living with her father as he works outside the community as a peasant farmer. She goes to school everyday, which is less than 30 minutes away by foot. Her mother says that she is a brilliant child. As Guerline is faced with daily chores to help her mom, she is forced to grow up fast and play a part in the family's progress and survival.

In many areas of the community, a lack of access to clean safe drinking water all year round is a real problem and can cause an increase in common water-borne diseases such as diarrhea and cholera. Throughout the year, Guerline's family get their water from rivers, streams or springs that are almost 1km away.
