Summary
My rough opinions of the job boards are as follows:
- MichWorks
- The State of Michigan Job Board - all of the inquiries I got through MichWorks1 were for completely inappropriate
jobs - such as an opportunity to sell insurance by commission by traveling throughout lower Michigan. I also believe
that MichWorks is being used by scammers and other predators to prey upon the unfortunate.
- Monster
- Monster is open to everyone - and is so undiscriminating that, like "MichWorks" above, you put yourself
at risk of being scammed. On the other hand, if you are already on MichWorks (and you have to be to show willing to
the Michigan unemployment agency), you may as well "show willing" here too. I'm not sure if it matters to
employers at all whether you are on Monster or not.
- Career Builder
- Not as bad as Monster, not as good as Dice. A place to keep an eye on things.
- The Ladders
- They promise $100K job search - but they're really preying on people who think too well of themselves. A waste of
money.
- Dice.Com
- This was a doorway for me into other technical job hunting sites. Through Dice, I was found by an employment agency
willing to work with me to polish (develop, really) my resume. Not that any of that found me a job, as I indicate above.
You will get plenty of contacts through Dice and related job sites. Most will be for temporary slave labor, requiring
uncompensated for relocation - but it's good to get the phone calls when you're stuck at home.
- Federal Government
- The Federal Government's jobs boards are complicated and cumbersome - and there's just not a lot of Federal jobs in Michigan.
- LinkedIn
- Think of Facebook crossed with Monster. If that doesn't scare you, then enjoy.
Try to apply to at least 10 jobs every day. Watch for duplicates. When a new job shows up, all of the head hunters will pounce
on it. Some will re-write or truncate the description slightly, but never enough to truely disguise that they're all
hawking the same position.
