The three spokes represented the three original members of Merit, Michigan State University, University of Michigan, and Wayne State University.
At the time, MERIT was an acronym for:
M ichigan E ducational R esearch I nformation T riad
Later, when Western Michigan University
joined, this logo wasn't changed, but the acronym was changed to:
M ichigan E ducational R esearch I nformation T etrad
Eventually, more and more of Michigan's public universities joined, and the idea that MERIT was an acronym was dropped. It became simply Merit.
