Diabetes Self-Management
The Self-Management Program was developed to help people with diabetes better manage their blood sugar levels. Medical studies have proven that if the sugar levels can be controlled the risk for complications (blindness, stroke, loss of limbs) is reduced. The program is open to the entire family of the diabetic client because diabetes can run in the families. Participants in the program learn: knowledge/understanding of diabetes; how to prevent complications; healthy eating skills/food as medicine; exercise suggestions; how to manage blood sugar levels; and coping/stress skills. These skills are taught through interactive, hands-on activities. The program is combined with traditional native American teachings, and offers an easygoing and relaxed atmosphere.
