The Tribal Judiciary is a branch of tribal government. Its role is vital to our government. It decides questions concerning the scope and existence of tribal power and gives definition to the substantive low governing the tribe. It is responsible to protect the procedural and individual rights of people and entities subject to tribal jurisdiction. Tribal Council has established two levels of courts-the Tribal Court and Tribal Appellate Court. The Tribal Court is where trials and hearings are held. Chief Judge Michael Petoskey is the presiding trial judge. Also, a division of the trial court is the Children's Court where minors who have been abused and neglected, and youthful offenders cases are heard. The Tribal Appellate Court consists of three appellate justices: Honorable Doris Adams, Honorable Pita Shepard and Honorable Donna Budnick. It provides an opportunity to correct mistakes that might have been made at the Trial Court level. The entire Tribal Judiciary is responsible for the development of court rules, forms, procedures and policies.
