11th Grade PSSA Test Scores, Chester County

Pennsylvania test scores. Pennsylvania breaks down its Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) test into four groups: High, High Middle, Low Middle and Low. Statewide, 25 percent of the students score in each group. For example, a school with more than 25 percent of its students scoring High exceeds the state average.

These tests were administered in March 1996 and released in June 1997. A (1) next to a school name indicates less than 80 percent of the students took the reading test, a (2) indicates less than 30 percent took it. A (3) indicates less than 80 percent took the math test and a (4) indicates less than 30 percent took it. Test participation may have a significant impact on scores. Also, comparisons of test scores among schools should be tempered by the percentage of low-income students in a school-- generally there is a high correlation between income and performance on standardized tests.

The quintiles show where a school ranked among other schools in the Pennsylvania counties in the Philadelphia area and where a Philadelphia school ranked against other city schools. They were derived by adding the percentage of students scoring High and High Middle in each of the tests. The first quintile (I) are those schools scoring in approximately the top fifth of the schools in the list, the second quintile (II) were those in the second fifth, and so on. Both the test scores and low-income estimates came from databases provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
