Treatment
& Healing:
Previous efforts have primarily focused on the
biomedical perspectives to treatment and healing of HIV/AIDS patients.
Not only have there been vast advancements in drug prophylaxis for opportunistic
infections but greater holistic approaches to healing have been seriously
investigated. It is in this arena of alternative medicine that significant
advancements have been made to complement the existing biomedical treatments.
Canada's healing communities have been turning to alternative methodolgies with less skepticism than in the past. As patients are seeking more humanistic approaches to their disease holistic medicine has been increasingly called on. Methods and techniques such as homeopathy, acupuncture, touch therapy, reiki, and yoga have been integrated in a broader means of treating the disease. In congruence to more advanced biomedical techniques, these alternative treatments have been investigated by only a specific population. Variables such as socioeconomic status and levels of education are believed to be connected to the awareness and willingness of individuals to these existing treatments.
