The site of 100 Tipis is located near the town of La Madera, New Mexico. The site was brought to our attention by Felipe Ortega who tells us that members of his family came here for ritual and celebratory reasons. The site contains multiple tipi rings (~20 located thus far), evidence of agricultural activity, a relay race-track, nearby clay deposits of white clay and red micaceous clay, Apachean projectile points, a Hispanic homestead and fields, and Jicarilla, Hispanic, and Pueblo pottery. The Site of 100 Tipis is also located near one of the richest micaceous clay regions in northern New Mexico, the Petaca district. Several sherds from this site were made from clays derived from Petaca and U.S. Hill clays.
