CREATION OF SIMPLE WEB PAGE: MORE TO COME.

  1. Obtain an e-mail account.
  2. Send an e-mail to me (sarhaus@umich.edu) informing me of your new address. Then, I will make up a distribution list and send a copy to each of you; this process may go through several iterations, so please be patient.
  3. Once you have a web page, you will know its "web address" (URL) if you know your uniqname. For example, my uniqname is "sarhaus" My web address is: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~sarhaus .Just substitute your uniqname for sarhaus and you will have the URL for your site. Note in the address that the symbol separating "www" from "personal" is a hyphen (not an underscore). The hyphen is the lower case character on the key that is two keys to the left of the backspace key on a standard keyboard. Also, note that the "slashes" used are "forward slashes" found as the lower case character on the key containing the question mark. Finally, the symbol immediately preceding the uniqname is a tilde, the upper case symbol on the key to the left of the numeral 1 on a standard keyboard.
  4. Create a simple web page. Open up Netscape (use Netscape Communicator; if not available, use Navigator Gold, v. 3.0 or higher; please do not use earlier versions of Netscape). If you have your own computer, consider downloading the most current version of Netscape from www.netscape.com.
  5. On the top menu bar, choose "File"; then "New"; then "Blank Page" (denoted File|New|Blank Page )
  6. You should now have a plain white screen showing. From the top menu bar:
  7. Format|Page Colors and Properties|Colors and Backgrounds

Click on the background color box: choose a color from the palette. Click on the "apply" button. Your blank white page should now change color.

  8. Type your name at the top of the page and any information you want. Just type as if you were using a word processor. If you wish to change the color of the text, go back to Format|Page Colors and Properties|Colors and Backgrounds and click on the box next to the words "Normal Text" and choose a color from the palette. This color will be the color of the typing. With a color selection for background and text that is pleasing to you, go ahead and type what you would like to have on your "home page".
  9. Go to File|Save As and save the file to your local hard drive or to a diskette. If you are in a University computing facility, ask a consultant to show you how to upload the web page; you will need to put it in your Public directory in the html subdirectory. If you are at home, ftp the file to your ifs home directory using your modem.
  10. You have available to you, for free, 5 Mb of space in your ifs home directory. You can choose to add more, at a small monthly cost, up to 100 Mb of space. Please consider this expense as being like purchasing a textbook or a course supplement guide--as a replacement for either of those costs (as text materials are all provided to you free).
  11. E-mail me when your page is uploaded.
