Extended Analysis
Extending the analysis by mapping counties against federal lands clearly illustrates that (1) many counties rank high in FPS but do not face the constraints of abutting federal lands and thus have room to expand into other counties, and (2) many Western counties are in the top 10-25% in FPS, but do not appear in the top 50 (or 2%). The following map shows the increasing number of Western counties that appear when the scope is extended to 500 (about 17%), and that the number of counties discounted for not abutting federal lands is centered amongst Eastern and Mid-Western counties.
