Elections

Please let a board member know if you wish to run for the Board. There will be two seats open this time.Bill Arlinghaus has agreed to run again.Bonnie Nolans seat is being filled for now, at least, by Andy Nolan. If you would like to throw your hat in the ring, and all hats are certainly most welcome, please contact a board member. Elections will be held at the Annual Meeting in April (April 16, this year).

Around the Chase

          Co-owner requests were heard.

The Board asked PASCO to encourage the Washtenaw County Drain Commissioners crews to clean up the downed trees in the creek area

The big news, of course, is the once in a century ice storm that hit us.All is relatively well and other than a scary few days, HC came through in fine form. The Conlins sent out a flyer during the storm and S. Arlinghaus called all homesan effort by the, at that time, only trained neighborhood watch people, under the new program (see article below for more on this topic). The extended Board is working with DTE to see if we can take the wires out of the woods rather than the woods out of the wires. As we learn more, follow-up will be communicated.Photo below from Conlin deck.

Some residents grouped together in restaurants during the outage as a nice way to get in touch.

Washtenaw County Drain Commissioners Office issued a plaque to Huron Chase as part of their Clean Streams Program. The plaque is on display at PASCO.Thanks to Ricky Agranoff, Bonnie Nolan, and Ellen Offen for making this happen!

Follow-up on water pressure report may be forthcoming in future newsletters as development proceeds on Washtenaw.

          Social Committee report was submitted.

          Suggestions heard or overheard:

Brace the pine trees on the berm that are leaning over after the ice storm

Clean up the sidewalks along the Parkway and keep the trees pruned of overhanging limbs

         Consider reinforcing laundry hoses

Neighborhood Watch

Ann Arbors new Police Chief, Daniel Oates, brings with him (from New York City) a wealth of knowledge in developing and maintaining effective neighborhood security. The Neighborhood Watch network is being restructured to be more active. If you were once a block captain and would like to remain one, you must be trained according to new guidelines.Call Adele ElAyoubi, 994-8775, to schedule a session.Call Adele before April 1 to schedule a session (or be dropped).

Within Huron Chase, four people have already been trained:Doug and Marilyn Campbell, Carolyn Conlin, and Sandy Arlinghaus.Doug has agreed to serve as block captain chair.Sandy serves also on the city-wide Neighborhood Watch Advisory Board of the Ann Arbor Police Department. We have a sufficient number of block captains but more are always welcome:more is better!

Recently, this new group met to talk about organization. Please note the local regional assignments listed below. Here are a few suggestions that came from that meeting and from the training sessions all attended.

There is no solicitation allowed in here.Boulder is a private drive as are our sidewalks.Do not hesitate to call 911 to force peddlers or others to leavethey are trespassing.Solicitors may be representing the group they say they represent; however, people casing a place to rob later have been known to pose as representatives of religious or other organizations. There is a City ordinance in place defining such activities; check the City website to find it if you are interested in the existing code.

City-wide, more that 80 percent of thefts occur when homes or vehicles are left unlocked:the obvious solution is to lock up!

Consider a buddy systemwhen you are not there, give a key to a neighbor as well as details about how to reach you and how to handle your alarm system.Communication is critical.

If you have an alarm system, use it.If you have a phone answering machine, use it (even when you are out of town but do not post your itinerary, or announce that you are out of town on a recorded message or website). In brief:use it, or lose it!

Clean up for your neighborkeep driveways, porches, and door handles free from flyers and magazines that do not come in the U.S. mails.

As the new system becomes established, you can look forward to Newsletters issued by AAPD.In addition, you can also look forward to various social events that foster neighborhood unity (sponsored by HC) that help, indirectly at least, to promote a more secure community.
