Objectives: To test the effects of Healthy White/Pro rinse(HWP), experimental priming/remineralizing rinse(ER), and no-rinse(NR) on the whitening and hardness of extracted human teeth.
Methods: Sixty-five sections of extracted human teeth were cleaned, polished; base shade(W) and enamel hardness(H) were measured and divided into six groups. Bleaching products used were Venus White Pro-22% Carbamide peroxide treatment (CP) and Venus White Max-38% Hydrogen Peroxide treatment (HP). Groups1,3,5 bleached(CP) for 1-hour/day for 7-days. Groups2,4,6 were treated once with bleach(HP). Whiteness was measured daily pre-bleaching for each sample. HWP and ER were used for 30s pre/post whitening. All samples were rinsed with distilled water(DW) and stored in artificial saliva(AS).
Group | Measurements | Pre-Rinse | Bleach | Post-Rinse | Rinse | Store |
1(n=12) | W, H | None | CP | None | DW | AS |
2(n=11) | W, H | None | HP | None | DW | AS |
3(n=12) | W, H | HWP-Pre | CP | HWP-Post | DW | AS |
4(n=10) | W, H | HWP-Pre | HP | HWP-Post | DW | AS |
5(n=9) | W, H | ER-Pre | CP | ER-Post | DW | AS |
6(n=11) | W, H | ER-Post | HP | ER-Post | DW | AS |
Post-whitening, the hardness and shade were measured. Shade results compared to determine if HWP, ER, or NR effect bleaching. Hardness and color difference analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance(ANOVA); paired groups analyzed using Tukey-HSD tests.
Results: HP performs significantly better than CP (p<0.001) when compare the mean change in whiteness by ANOVA testing. In the Tukey HSD tests, NR performs better than HWP (p=0.003). ER performs better than HWP with a statistical significance (p<0.05). No significant difference noted between ER and NR. For mean hardness, CP performs significantly better than HP with increased hardness numbers (p<0.05.) When both data sets are analyzed using two-way ANOVA they show no significant synergistic effects (p=0.496.)
Conclusions: NR and ER perform significantly better than HWP. No significant hardness difference between the rinses and NR.
