Strategies for Minimizing Losses during Follow-up

• During design and enrollment

  1. Exclude those likely to be lost
  

  • Planning to move
  • Unwilling to return
  2. Obtain information to allow future tracking

  • Complete address and telephone number(s) from subject
  • Address and telephone for one or two close friends or relatives who do not live with the subject
  • Name, address, and telephone number of primary physician
  • Social security (and Medicare) numbers

• During follow-up

  1. Periodic contact with subjects
  

  • phone & mail
  2. For those who are not reached by phone or mail

  • friends, relatives, or physicians, Social Security Administration, National Death Registry, Do everything!
