SHOCK is an original theatre troupe comprised of fifteen first
through fourth-year UM students dedicated to educating Ann Arbor
youth on the dangers of drugs and drug abuse. Using humorous and
age appropriate skits, the troupe has been performing in AAPS fifth-
grade classrooms since the fall of 2001.
Students Helping Others Chose Knowledgeably (SHOCK) began in 2001 with a small group of MCSP students who wanted to become involved in the greater Ann Arbor community. Now, just three years later, SHOCK has become a leading substance abuse prevention resource in Ann Arbor Public Schools fifth-grade classrooms. SHOCK presents the serious subject of drug and alcohol abuse in the form of original skits. Most of these skits are based on popular childrens culture: some current skits include Spongebob Square Pants, American Idol, and Batman.
The
skits that we perform use characters from popular childrens television shows,
movies, and books to introduce these difficult issues with an entertaining and
understandable approach. Each skit has been approved by Ms. Joyce Hunter, AAPS
Health Coordinator, for use in fifth-grade classrooms. The show requires a
reasonably large open area and runs for approximately one hour. Performances
start at 1:30 or 1:45, and may be scheduled for Fridays afternoons. The
worksheet is to follow the skit.
