Expertise
Professor Stein’s expertise is in the area of
product design assessment with particular experience in the fields of automotive
and truck engineering. His educational background is in mechanical design,
system design, biomechanics and machine control (for more details, please see
his CV). He has experience with vehicles (e.g., cars, trucks, bicycles etc.);
manufacturing machines (e.g., presses, metal cutting machines, chemical dryers,
etc.); furniture (e.g., reclining chairs, office equipment); machines using
cables, chains and hoists (e.g., lifts, scaffolds); construction equipment
(e.g., skid steer front loaders, boring machines); leg prostheses; and a
general range of consumer products.
As a Professor of Mechanical Engineering, he teaches students the fundamental
science underlying engineering and how to apply this to the design of products.
As such, he is able to assess the mechanical design of a product with respect
to basic engineering principles, standards, and general industry practice as
exemplified in the design of similar products. He is also able to determine the
reasons for a machine's failure to perform and to assess the novelty of
designs.
