Laws
What should be addressed in the future???
Since the topic of genetically modified foods is relatively new, many new laws need to be drafted addressing the issues presented by genetically modified foods.First of all, since the long-term effects of GMOs are unknown, laws should be made to require the further study of effects on the human body and the ecosystem. The crossing of genes in crops in order to make food unaffected by herbicides and insects can alter the ecosystem (creating a “superweed”). Therefore, the ecosystem needs to be protected by law so that we do not severely harm our environment in the future.
Another law that should be made is one that would respond to the public’s right to know what they are eating. The FDA does not require most GMOs to be labeled. That means that people are eating GM foods even if they do not know it. Many argue that people should be given the choice of what they are eating and that it is unfortunate that the government is promoting biotechnology rather than protecting its people.
Specifically, GM foods that are produced by genes taken from an allergenic product absolutely need to be labeled. Studies should also be required so that the public can have access to data on what (if any) allergies are triggered by what products.
