Recombinant DNA

Genetically engineered DNA prepared by splicing genes from one species and transplanting them into the cells of a different organism or different species so that the DNA is replicated and becomes part of the organism's genetic make up.  They are cleaved by restriction enzymes and joined by ligases.(15)

 What does this mean???
When a scientist wants to take a trait from one potato, such as its large size, and produce new potatoes that have this same trait, they find the gene responsible for this trait.  Once the gene is found they take that sequence and put it into the DNA of a new potato.  This is done by using restriction enzymes to cut out a particular sequence.  One way to visualize this is a pair of scissors (restriction enzyme) cutting out a word (desirable trait) in a sentence.  After the word is taken out, it is then glued into (ligase) a different sentence, giving this sentence the trait of the other sentence.  In other words, the new potato now contains this desirable trait.
