Carl Berger
Director, Academic Information Processes. Carl has over 30 years experience in improving instruction starting with being a school teacher. He received his doctorate from Berkeley in 1971 and became a professor at Michigan in 1972. Here he has been Associate Dean and Dean of the School of Education and for the last 6 years has been a Senior Manager in ITD. Carl has received awards for his research on how students learn using microcomputers and is on the board of directors for MITN (the Michigan Information Technology Network), NMC (the New Media Centers) and the Seaborg Science Center. His current work includes developing object oriented instructional tools and their integration into the entire instructional process as well as studying opportunities in asynchronous learning. Renee Woodten
Frost
Director, Administrative Information Processes. Renee is responsible for promoting the innovation of the University's administrative processes and determining what information technology products and services are needed to support them. In this role, she facilitates the University's Process Management Lead Team. Renee joined the University of Michigan more than 20 years ago and has served in numerous capacities in the Information Technology Division and its predecessors since 1979. Her experience includes management roles in information systems development, information retrieval systems, institutional data management, telecommunications systems, user training and documentation, public relations and marketing. She also has experience in total quality management, process reengineering/innovation, and planning/consulting. Renee established the Data Administration function in 1990, partnered with Financial Operations to initiate the Strategic Data Planning effort in 1991, and has served as an ITD senior manager for the past three years. She received her A.B. from the University of Michigan.
Victor K. Wong
Director, Research Information Processes, a newly created position in University Information Processes to respond to the faculty's need in information technology support for research processes. Victor is a professor of physics and a member of the U of M High Energy Spin Physics Group. He has worked over 27 years at U of M and has served as chair, dean, and provost on the regional campuses prior to returning to the Ann Arbor campus as one of the senior managers of ITD.
Pattie Boettger
Data Analyst. Pattie has worked for the University of Michigan's Information Technology Division for 5 years. She began her career in the Documentation Library, gaining valuable insight regarding ITD's internal processes and move to production procedures. She moved from there into a job as Programmer Analyst, working on systems for various University Schools and Colleges. In this role she developed a strong understanding of end user perceptions and needs. She has brought a strong blending of these two viewpoints to her current role.
Amy K. Brooks
Data Administrator. Amy has been involved with information technology at the University since 1987, and in Data Administration since it's inception in 1991. She firmly believes in managing data as an institutional resource and enjoys working closely with the University community to achieve this goal. To maintain balance in her life and manage the stress of the fast-paced change inherent to information technology, Amy can be found running the streets of Ann Arbor.
Tom Brubaker
Senior Process Analyst. Tom joined ITD's Process Analysts from the UM Hospitals' Design and Construction office. He has worked in the private sector with a professional practice firm (architectural and engineering) and held a number of positions at the Hospitals; he brings experience in project management, and in process development for project-focused and service-operations environments. With a BS in Business Management (from Penn State) and MLA (from UM), Fall football Saturdays usually (... not always) offer Tom something to be happy about.
Sarah Flynn
Administrative Assistant. Sarah joined ITD in July 1996 after working for 5 years in Student Affairs for the Michigan Student Assembly and Student Legal Services. She received her Bachelor's in Business Administration majoring in Accounting from Grand Valley State University.
Annie Geo-Thomas
Data Analyst. Annie recently joined the Data Administration group and her current responsibilities include the establishment and maintenance of stable, reliable, and accessible collections of institutional data. After receiving her Master's degree in Computer-Based Information Systems from Eastern Michigan University, Annie initially worked as a programmer/analyst and later taught at Washtenaw Community College. Annie has a varied educational background which includes a Bachelor's degree in English Literature and a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Baruch College (CUNY), New York.
Ann Hoadley
Senior Process Analyst. Ann has spent more than 25 years in a computing career doing systems development, mostly at U of M. In recent years, she has worked to apply this system experience more broadly to help University departments look at all aspects of improving their processes. Ann graduated from U of M (we won't say when!) with a B.S. in math.
Larry Kaiser
Process Administrator. Larry has worked in project coordination, analysis, and programming of administrative systems at the University since 1986. He organized and led Lotus Notes Groupware Services for the campus and participated in the Strategic Data Planning core team. His special interests include using groupware technologies to enable business process redesign. Larry received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in History from the University of Michigan and an M.S. in Computer-based Information Systems from Eastern Michigan University.
Sylvia Kay
Administrative Associate. Sylvia Kay has worked with Carl Berger (UIP's Director of Academic Information Processes) since August, 1995. Her experience as a University staff member predates the formation of ITD and includes working relationships with many people in various areas of the University including vice presidents, hospital administrators, students, and researchers as well as computer programmers and secretaries. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in English Language and Literature from Eastern Michigan University in 1993. During her prior ITD assignment at Merit Network, she exercised her curiosity about grants and agreements, intellectual properties issues, corporate budget reporting, and the UM data access project. She acted as Merit's primary liaison with DRDA on matters regarding grants and agreements.
Linda King
Programmer Analyst. Linda joined the University of Michigan in 1991. She works with the Data Analysts and Process Analysts to provide data and process documentation support using CASE and other tools for this service. Linda's prior background includes voice technology training and documentation as well as management positions in manufacturing and service industries. After working in the business community for many years, Linda returned to school at a mature age to continue her education - receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration with an emphasis in Management from Cleary College in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Paul J. Millis
Senior Process Analyst. Paul has over 10 years of information technology experience in both support and development along with 4 years as a data processing auditor. He joined the University of Michigan in 1994. A native of Chicago, Paul worked previously in manufacturing and in the financial services sectors. He graduated from MSU with a BA and an MBA in Accounting.
Jon Rothman
Senior Data Analyst. Jon joined the University of Michigan from the Harvard University Library where he spent the last 13 years doing library systems design, development, and implementation. His educational background includes an A.B. (UM) in Creative Writing and Comparative Literature and a M.S. (Simmons College) in Library and Information Science.
Peggy Wilczewski
Senior Process Analyst. Peggy began her career in information technology as a Systems Engineer for EDS after being recruited from her homestate of New York. It was at Elmira College that she received her B.S. in Systems Analysis and Applications. During her time at University of Michigan, Peggy has provided systems analysis, systems support, and team leadership for the Office of Financial Aid. Recently, she has worked to apply this system experience more broadly to help University departments look at all aspects of improving their processes. She also serves as an M-Quality Facilitator on the ITD Facilitator Council. While Amy Brooks might be found running the streets of Ann Arbor, Peggy can be found swimming laps in the pool at Vic Tanny after work hours.
