Oberlin Tourney, 9-10 Oct 2004

Excellent tournament this weekend in Oberlin.

Becca, Courtney, Katka, BeckyW, KatieM, Lis, SarahS, Jessie, Jojo, Jules, Hutch, Jess, Helen, Leu, Mac, Jill, SarahL, Liz, Nina and Dana represented as Michigan X and Y on Saturday... and then combined on Sunday. We faced teams from near and far- Oberlin, Carneige Mellon, Towson, Ohio University, Kent, Wooster, Wake Forest and U of Chicago.

If you combine the results from the various Flywheel teams, we were 2-8 on the weekend- our two victories coming against the Oberlin B team. However, this hides the true accomplishments of the weekend. With every round, the scores got closer, the points more difficult for the other team, our own chances to score more frequent. In short, we got better both as individuals and as a team with every game played. The best example of this is the two games we played against Wake Forest. On Saturday, Team Y played hard but lost 3-13. On Sunday, we played just as hard, but with more experience and lost 7(or8?)-15.  And we were on the goal line for several more scores. They had no easy points.

If we keep improving at this rate, those teams better look out in a couple of months... There were so many highlights, but the best was really how all of the returners stepped up to lead on and off the field and all the recruits gave 110% for 6 tough games. We have established a strong foundation for Team D- our marks are TOUGH. Now we need to get the other half in gear- covering cutters to the open side. On offense, we were definitely stacking and clearing much better at the end of the weekend. Our hucks were hitting open receivers and we were staying out of the lane. There is still a lot of work to do such as throwing under pressure and making hard cuts in the lane, but we are off to a very good start. Woosh. Aaaaaahhhh.

Yippee! I could not be happier.
