U-M's research expenditures reached $656 million last year, marking a 10.8 percent increase from 2001 and the 20th straight year of continuous growth, according to U-M Vice President for Research Fawwaz Ulaby's annual research report. Ulaby also noted that the Institute for Scientific Information ranked the U-M ninth out of 100 federally funded universities in terms of the impact of its research.

Association News
It's a great time to revisit your job seeker profile on the Alumni Association's CareerPort and make sure that your information is up to date. On Jan. 15, we added several new fields, including "School/College." It's important to provide this information so that employers searching for graduates of your academic unit can find you. And while you're at it, upload a new resume or fill in some of the blanks that you skipped the first time around.

It's easy to bring yourself up to date. Simply log in and select the "My Info" and "Profile/Resume" options to edit your information. If you don't have an account yet, get started by clicking the "Create Your Account" link in the log-in box.

Arts & Culture
Several Michigan grads are appearing on the silver screen right now:

  • Lucy Liu, '90, who was one-third of "Charlie's Angels," plays Go-to-Hell Kitty in the movie "Chicago."
  • "Deliver Us From Eva," a new film from novelist and filmmaker Gary Hardwick, '82, opens next Friday. Hardwick wrote the screenplay and directed this romantic comedy, which stars LL Cool J.
  • Matt Letscher, '92, plays a supporting role in the new Jeff Daniels movie, "Super Sucker," about a door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman.

The Royal Shakespeare Company, perhaps the most famous classical theater company in the world, returns to Ann Arbor this March as part of a five-year relationship with the U-M and the University Musical Society. During its three-week residency, the RSC will perform "Coriolanus," "The Merry Wives of Windsor" and the United States premiere of "Midnight's Children," based on Salman Rushdie's award-winning book. The Alumni Association is celebrating the RSC's residency with a lunch and learn on Sunday, Feb. 16, and a performance afterglow on Saturday, March 8. There are also University events scheduled in support of the residency (see "Regional Events" below for details).

Science & Health
In a recent study, a team at the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center discovered that sentinel lymph node mapping can be used on patients with melanoma on the face, head or neck with no adverse effects. Because of the dense matrix of nerves and blood vessels in those areas, physicians have been apprehensive in doing the procedure, which is routinely used on other parts of the body. Mapping can give patients an earlier diagnosis and a higher survival rate.

True Blue Travel
Treasures of the SeineTravel as the world's rich and famous do---on the Concorde. On the Alumni Association's "Concorde Adventure in Paris and London," you'll fly from New York to Paris on Air France's Concorde and make the trip in less than four hours. The trip, April 3-11, includes plenty of time for sightseeing, shopping and exploring.

Sports
The U-M men's tennis team triumphed over Tulsa on Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Case Tennis Center. Although the tennis team lost three doubles matches, sophomores Josef Fischer, Vinny Gossain, David Anving, Michael Rubin, and junior Anthony Jackson tore up the court, winning five of six singles matches to bring home a victory. The Wolverines face Ball State tomorrow and Florida State on Sunday; both matches are in Ann Arbor.
