The following describes Design Michigan's Community Design Advisory Program as it was initially conceived and conducted. Communities interested in learning about the current modified program are encourages to contact the Design Michigan program office.

The Community Design Advisory Program was established in 1987 to help Michigan communities understand and utilize a community design management approach for successful community and commercial area environmental and economic improvements. The program used a competitive application and award process for short term community education and demonstration programs. Community analysis and subsequent design recommendations were provided by a four person design team with combined expertise in the areas of community planning, urban design, landscape architecture, architecture, historic preservation, interior design, graphic design and project management.
