HOW DO YOU WORK WITH AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?When a job involves the interior design of a new building, it should be stressed that the interior designer should have input on design and programming from the very start, working closely with the architect and client.
No two jobs ever follow exactly the same procedures. Some will use an abbreviated form of this program; some will not follow each step in this precise sequence.
PRE-PLANNINGA. Client defines project scope, budget, and schedule and collaborates with designer in determining client and designer responsibilities.
B. Designer categorizes interior services, i.e. architectural, mechanical, electrical and furnishings.
C. Designer prepares work schedule and fee estimate of design services as required. He then presents contractual agreement to client.
D. Client reviews submitted fee estimates and work schedule. Approves contract agreement.
PROGRAMMINGA. Client provides information about number of people, space requirements, types of activities and future requirements.
B. Client provides special equipment requirements, i.e. reproduction, communication, vending and secretarial equipment.
C. Designer surveys existing facilities or reviews architect's plans for new facilities, determines code requirements and existing electrical/mechanical systems.
D. Designer establishes space, activity, equipment and personnel requirements. Presents written program and diagrams.
E. Client approves written program.
