DESIGN JOURNALS
The following is a list of journals which include the areas of architecture, design, design history, criticism & theory, graphic design (many fields), interior design & landscape architecture. After each journal is a short description of what is featured. This is not a complete list, it is just to give you an idea of what journals are available in the field of design.
ARCHITECTUREA + U (Architecture & Urbanism)- International review of current architecture. Japanese.
Architectural Design: A.D- Information on architects of the present and past. Each article focuses on a theme that relates to architecture application today.
Architectural Digest- Contains four sections; Interior Design, Travel, Art & Antiques and Special Features. Includes both contemporary and period work.
Architectural Record- Business, design and engineering features for practicing architects and architectural engineers.
The Architectural Review- Contains articles on historic buildings and new designs.
Art & Design- Architectural Design Publications.-looks at important issues and leading figures of contemporary art establishing the trends of our age.
Inland Architect- Reporting on architecture and design in the Midwest. Also features projects done by mid-western based architects. Concerned with the building arts, the environment and the quality of design.
Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians- Articles on architectural history and criticism.
Landscape Architecture- Contains landscape architecture, urban design, parks & recreation, architecture, and sculpture. Also includes an international section.
MSA Bulletin- Michigan Society of Architecture. Covers architecture, historic preservation, interior design and landscape architecture.
Progressive Architecture- Contains sections of Design, Technics, Practice and departments. Includes brief descriptions of new products and information relative to architectural law and government developments.
DESIGNAbitare- Articles on renovation, architectural topics on cities and countries worldwide. Text in Italian and English. Italian.
Axis- Urban, international design magazine. "Creative Trends" section gives readers a chance to show their work and describe their ideas or their backgrounds. Text in Japanese and partial in English. Japanese.
Blueprint- The Leading Magazine of Architecture and Design. Tabloid covering design, architecture and the visual arts.
Casabella- International architectural review concerned with urban design, architectural and industrial design. Emphasis is on contemporary architecture. Italian (out of print 1995).
Design Issues- Published for the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Art and Design. History, theory and criticism of design. Graphic design to industrial design.
Design Perspectives- International coverage of current events in architecture, art education, graphic arts, historic preservation and interior design.
Design Quarterly- Published for the Walker Art Center. Subjects in architecture, design and contemporary graphics.
Domus- Journal of Modern Architecture, design and decorative arts. New products presented. Extensive advertising section. Text in Italian and English. Italian.
Form- Swedish design. Articles on design work and art in Sweden, the Nordic countries and the rest of the world. Includes interior and industrial design, furniture, textiles, ceramics, glass and handicraft products. Swedish.
Form. Function. Finland- Finish design and art.
ID: International Design- Industrial and graphic design focus plus furniture, packaging, technology and social implications. Annual issues give resource listings.
Metropolis: The Architecture and Design Magazine of New York- Covers architecture, design, arts and crafts, interiors and furniture. Emphasis is on the Metropolitan New York area.
Modo- Italian design magazine. Text in Italian.
Surface Design Journal- Surface design, the coloring, patterning/designing of fabric, fiber and other materials.
DESIGN HISTORY, CRITICISM & THEORYDesign Issues- Scholarly forum for history, theory and criticism of non-architectural design.
Journal of Decorative and Propaganda Arts- Annual publication on single topic regarding art and design.
Journal of Design History- Research and debate on interdisciplinary explorations of material culture such as anthropology, sociology, studies in culture, design management, and the histories of architecture, business, science and technology, and economics.
Visible Language- Covers research on the visual media of language expression
GRAPHIC DESIGNAIGA Journal of Graphic Design- Criticism, analysis and reporting on graphic design and related fields.
Art Direction- Advertising art, photography, typography and related graphic arts fields. Articles on current work.
Emigre- Established and emerging graphic designers worldwide featured. Showcases works which are experimental in nature.
Graphic Design: USA- America's largest audited circulation of graphic designers and art directors.
Graphic Design USA: The Annual of the American Institute of Graphic Arts.- Contains information on ongoing programs and competitions that identify excellent design. Contains reproductions of works presented at AIGA exhibitions.
Graphis- The international Journal of Visual Communications. Information on design, graphics and illustration includes art director, designer, description, and illustrator. Zurich.
HOW- Graphic arts, photography, printing, typography. Deals with the "how-to's" of graphic design from illustrations techniques to computer graphics.
Idea: International Advertising Art- Bilingual publication devoted to presenting world level authors in advertising art centered on the graphic design field and their related fields. Japanese.
International Advertising Design- International magazine, covering printed advertising.
Leonardo- Fine art and graphic design journal. Concerned with the issues related to the interaction of the arts, sciences and technology.
Print- Comprehensive graphics, advertising, packaging journal. International coverage of new visual communication.
The Studio Magazine- Graphic arts. Covers new products and events that relate to the advertising and professional design community.
INTERIOR DESIGNThe Design Specifier- A trade magazine that covers areas in antiques, architecture, decorative arts, furniture, historic preservation, interior design and textiles.
Design Today- Business magazine for interior design.
Interior Design (New York)- Serves all concerned with the planning, design, specification and/or purchase of interior furnishings and products for all types of contract/commercial and residential installations. Information on trends and new products.
Interior Design (England)- Articles and financial services for interior designers, architects, and specifiers. Sponsors student competition and the international contract furnishing and interior design exhibition.
Interiors- Contract/commercial interior design field.
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTUREGarden Design- Covers areas such as site plans, garden news and design details among other areas in Landscape architecture.
IFLA News- Design, planning, development and conversation within the field of landscape architecture.
Landscape Architecture- Features landscape architecture, urban design, parks and recreation, architecture, and sculpture.
Landscape Journal- Covers a variety of topics related to design, planning and management.
