(1-4, 1-0) came into the game needing a win and got just
that in dominating fashion 24-3.
All available players saw significant
playing time and 11 different players scored goals in the
rout. Four players recorded hat-tricks, led by freshman
Sam Zetlin (Framingham,
Mass./Framingham) who scored four goals. Freshman
Jane Petoskey (Ann
Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), sophomore
Ifat Ribon (Ann
Arbor, Mich./Huron) and junior Amanda Schutte (San
Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon) all scored three goals.
The Wolverines jumped ahead early,
scoring five goals in the opening five minutes of the
contest. Senior captain
Arielle Dyner (Livingston, N.J./Livingston)
opened the game with her third goal of the season, scoring
off a feed from junior and fellow captain
Britt Boehm (Rocky
River, Ohio/Magnificat).
Boehm assisted on three of Michigan's
first four goals and finished with five in the game to set a
Wolverine single-game record. Michigan also set a
single-game team-best with 17 total assists. The club's 24
goals tie a program record. The Wolverines controlled a
program record 21 of the 29 draws (72.4%) in the game.
The Rockets did not gain possession until
6:00 into the contest at which point they already trailed
5-0.
Michigan would score 10 more goals
before halftime on its way to a 15-0 advantage at the break. Ribon, Zetlin, sophomore
Ani Shekerjian (Bloomfield
Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) and junior
Rachel Killian (Plymouth,
Mich./Ladywood) scored twice in the first half while
sophomore Maddie Palmer
(Bloomfield, Mich./Seaholm) scored once and added
three assists in the opening period.
The Wolverines used the second half to
work on their offense, passing the ball around the perimeter
several times while working for a good shooting opportunity.
Six of Michigan's nine second-half goals were assisted,
with two of the non-assisted goals coming on free-position
shots.
The Rockets finally found the back of
the net with 10:20 to play in the contest and would then add
two more goals in the final minutes off free-position
opportunities.
Sophomore
Emmy Scheidt (Birmingham,
Mich./Seaholm) started the game before freshman
Hillary Handelsman
(Arnold, Md./Broadneck) replaced her. Handelsman
saved all three shots she faced, including one free-position
attempt. Sophomore Mynda
Krato (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South)
came in during the second half to finish out the game in
goal.
Michigan will get a two-week break
before its next game vs. John Carroll on March 14 at
Oosterbaan Fieldhouse.
Game Notes: Petoskey, Schutte,
Palmer, Ribon and Lexi Fader each scored their first goals
of the season...Petoskey and Fader's goals were the firsts
of their Michigan careers...Boehm topped the previous
single-game assists record of four which had been held by
Amy Santoriello and Jane Friend...Michigan's previous
game-high for total assists was 14, set against Central
Michigan last season...The previous record for draw controls
was 13, set against Cal Poly at the National Tournament last
season...Boehm, Petoskey and Ribon tied for a game-high five
points.
