ANN ARBOR—The Michigan women's club lacrosse team opened their spring season in a scrimmage against Adrian College. They sought revenge on the Bulldogs after a 5-8 loss in the Best of the Midwest Playday during fall ball. After setting the pace early in the game, Michigan couldn't hold onto their lead.
Senior Maddie Palmer put the Wolverines on the board with an early goal. Adrian retaliated with a quick goal of their own and that became a reoccurring theme throughout the first half. Sophomore Julianne Patterson, junior Rachel Stattler and freshman Katie Mezwa each score a goal for the Wolverines when Adrian started playing more aggressive. There were three Bulldogs forced into the penalty dog house.
The Wolverines maintained their composure, led by solid defensive efforts from sophomore Sarah Norris and junior Jamee Jacobson until the end of the half, when the score was 6-6.
"I was very impressed," said senior Ani Shekerjian. "It was a good first test."
But Michigan started to run out of gas as Adrian came back into the game ready to put pressure on the Wolverines. Michigan found themselves chasing the Bulldogs both up and down the field and on the score board.
Goalie senior Emmy Scheidt contributed a solid effort in goal, keeping the Wolverines close, despite Adrian's multiple wide open looks on goal.
"Emmy had a great day in goal," said Patterson. "And our defense played really well adjusting to the new schemes."
And although they were down by three in the last minutes of the game, Michigan never gave up. Shekerjian and sophomore Carly King scored the two final goals on Michigan's behalf.
But it wasn't enough to catch up to Adrian.
It was a tough loss for the team, but it's early in the season and the Wolverines are looking ahead to bigger and better things — the Santa Barbara Shootout.
"We have a ton of things to work on," said Michigan coach Ginny Hughes.
