Ann Arbor, MI- The Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans played a tough and physical game as is expected any time these bitter rivals square off. It was a back and forth game as each team had scoring runs.
The game started off positively for the Wolverines as Katie Mezwa took charge with 2 goals and an assist to help Michigan achieve a 3-0 lead. After MSU answered with 2 goals of their own, Michigan went on a 5-0 run before MSU scored again to end the first half with the score 8-3.
After a long halftime where the Michigan team and fans celebrated "senior night" -- highlighting the strong 4-year careers of Claire Gadra, Jamee Jacobson, and Rachel Stattler, as well as Grad Student "rookie" Stephanie Gerretsen, the Wolverines stepped on the field happy, but maybe a little distracted. MSU came out and started the 2nd half as Michigan started the 1st, scoring 3 straight goals, bringing them within 2 goals (8-6). From that point forward it became a game of strategy and will as Michigan deployed their stall offense forcing MSU to make a move. However, once the Wolverines decided to take the game into their own hands, the Spartans did not have an answer. Michigan managed to score 3 more goals, as MSU was only able to score 1 more, giving Michigan the 11-7 victory.
Michigan will look to continue their winning ways as Oakland visits Ann Arbor Tuesday night.
