Colorado Springs, CO. – Michigan has been looking to get their first win in Colorado this season after going 0-6. Today’s matchup pinned the Wolverines against the 16th seeded Huskies from Northeastern. Both teams lost their first two matchups of the National Tournament (Michigan: Texas and Maryland, Northeastern: Colorado State and Southern California).

Although Michigan was missing some key players, they did not let that get them down and showed up determined to leave the field winners. Additionally, they finally had a game without any rain. Michigan greatly improved their transition game and stepped up all aspects of their game.

Northeastern was the first team to score; but Michigan quickly fought back and took the lead. Once the Wolverines gained the lead, they never let it go and had control the rest of the game. After the Huskies took the 1-0 lead, Michigan went on a 6-1 run giving them a comfortable lead that allowed them to settle and dictate the rate of play. The Wolverines took the momentum and a 9-5 lead into halftime.

Freshman Sydney Franko (Farmington, MI/Saint Mary’s Academy (CO)), played a solid game in the net for the University of Michigan, and finished the game with 9 saves. The Wolverines had many players contributing to their offensive success throughout the first half. Freshman Karly Rolls (Fenton, MI./Powers Catholic) lead the way with 2 goals and an assist, junior Julianne Patterson (Rochester, NY./Victor) had 1 goal with 2 assists, and freshman Carrie Quigley (Birmingham, MI./Seaholm) and sophomore Emma McGregor (Columbus, OH./ Columbus School for Girls) had 2 goals each.

Michigan was able to extend their lead to six in the second half; the closest the Huskies were able to get was within four before the Wolverines were able widen to their lead again. The second half of the game was a little more physical as multiple yellow cards, and one red, were given out. However, that did not throw the Wolverines off their game, as they were able to regain focus and finish the game with a 16-9 lead.

Once again, the second half was filled with multiple contributors on offense. Patterson and sophomore Katie Mezwa (Rochester Hills, MI./ Sacred Heart) both had 1 goal and 1 assist. McGregor finished the game with a hat trick.

Michigan will play its final game of the National Tournament, and the season, tomorrow at 8:00 AM MST, against Virginia, who beat the #15 seed Oregon today.
