Santa Barbara, Calif. -- Cal Poly
(2-1) jumped out to a big lead off an early 7-0 run and
managed to hold off Michigan's (0-3) second-half rally to
defeat the Wolverines 11-7.
The Mustangs scored the game's first
seven goals before junior tri-captain
Britt Boehm (Rocky
River, Ohio/Magnificat) scored off a feed from freshman
Sam Zetlin (Framingham, Mass./Framingham). Junior
Rachel Killian
(Plymouth, Mich./Ladywood) then notched back-to-back goals,
the second off an assist from freshman
Rachel Stattler
(Bloomfield, Mich./Sacred Heart) to cut the deficit to 7-3.
Cal Poly would add one more goal before
the half to take an 8-3 lead into the break.
The Wolverines were on the short end of
a strange play that ended up taking a goal off the board in
the first half. The officials called a foul on the Cal Poly
goalie, moving her out of the 8-meter zone and leaving Boehm
an empty net for a free-position opportunity. Just as Boehm
hit the empty net for the apparent goal, a Cal Poly defender
intentionally jumped in the way of Boehm to draw a
shooting-space foul which resulted in a yellow card for
intentionally fouling but allowed the Mustang goalie back in
net for the succeeding eight-meter which she was able to
save.
The Wolverines showed their heart,
putting together a strong second half. Freshman
Emmy Scheidt (Birmingham,
Mich./Seaholm) kept Michigan in the game, turning away several point-blank
shots and only allowing one goal on six free-position
chances for Cal Poly.
Zetlin scored twice in the opening
minutes of the half, giving her a team-high seven goals on
the season. Her first tally was actually a pass intended for
freshman Ani Shekerjian (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Detroit
Country Day). The pass sailed over Shekerjian’s outstretched
stick and past the unsuspecting goalie for the surprise
goal.
Zetlin's second goal came after
freshman Kelsey Martin (Radnor, Pa./Radnor) intercepted a
Mustang pass and raced down the field before finding a
cutting Zetlin for the score.
Freshman
Alaina Mezwa (Rochester Hills,
Mich./Sacred Heart) added her first career goal off a
free-position and Shekerjian notched a marker off a
give-and-go from Zetlin to wrap up the Wolverine scoring.
Michigan will play its final game of
the weekend tomorrow morning against #8 Colorado St. (1-1)
at 10:00 AM ET.
Game Notes: Senior tri-captain
Amy Santoriello’s did not play (foot/ankle) however x-rays
were negative...Through three games, Zetlin leads the team
with seven goals, followed by Shekerjian, Killian and Amy
Johnson who all have four.
