ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- Top-ranked
Santa Clara (14-1) used a 3-0 run in the closing minutes to
finish off an 8-5 victory over No. 13 Michigan (7-6) on
Saturday morning (April 10) in the second game of the
Lindenwood Invitational.
The Broncos struck first at the 24:51
mark to take the 1-0 lead. Michigan responded with
back-to-back scores from Junior Rachel Killian (Plymouth,
Mich./Ladywood) and senior Amy Johnson (Washington,
D.C./Holton-Arms). Senior tri-captains Amy
Santoriello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and
Arielle Dyner (Livingston, N.J./Livingston)
assisted on the tallies.
Santa Clara finished the half on a 2-0
run and held Michigan off the board for the final 17:00 of
the half to take a 3-2 lead at the break.
Johnson evened the score in the
opening minute of the second half, firing a shot over the
stick of Santa Clara's all-American goalie on a
free-position.
The Broncos struck for two quick goals
to push their lead to 5-3 before Alaina Mezwa (Rochester
Hills, Mich./Sacred Heart) netted her 12th goal of the
season. In typical fashion for the speedy sophomore, she
gathered the ball in the Michigan zone and carried it past
one Santa Clara defender after another to cut the deficit to
5-4.
After another Santa Clara score,
Johnson fired a turnaround shot that found the left post and
junior Ashley Felber (Denver, Colo./East) ran
in and deposited the rebound into the back of the net to
trip Santa Clara's advantage to 6-5.
The Santa Clara defense locked down
over the final 12:00 and the Broncos added two more scores
as time wound down to secure the 8-5 victory.
