Santa Barbara, Calif. -- Playing in its season opener, #5 Michigan (0-1) dropped a 12-9 decision to #10 UCLA (1-0). UCLA dominated the draw and took advantage of Michigan's miscues to pull off the upset. The Bruins won 16 of 23 draws and made the most of their offensive opportunities as they unleashed 22 shots on goal.

The Bruins struck first, netting back-to-back goals to start the contest before freshman Sam Zetlin (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) scored her first career goal. Zetlin played an instrumental role in securing the possession that led to her goal when she won a jump ball after a double-foul call.

Sophomore Ani Shekerjian (Bloomfield, Mich./Detroit Country Day) tied the game at 2-2 with a goal from point-blank range after she caught a beautifully-threaded pass through traffic from junior Rachel Killian (Plymouth, Mich./Ladywood).

UCLA regained the lead with a goal from senior captain Lauren Ariniello at the 17:50 mark of the first half but Michigan responded with a free-position goal from Amy Johnson (Washington, D.C./Holton-Arms).

With the game deadlocked at 3-3, UCLA scored back-to-back goals, taking a 5-3 lead with 11:43 to play in the first half.

Freshman Rachel Stattler (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Sacred Heart) scored Michigan's third free-position goal of the half to cut the deficit to one and junior tri-captain Britt Boehm (Rocky River, Ohio/Magnificat) followed with a goal off a feed from fellow tri-captain Arielle Dyner (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) to tie the game at 5-5.

The Bruins scored once more as time ran down in the first half but the Wolverines were able to control the succeeding draw and Killian hit the back of the net with 0:03 left on the clock to make the halftime score 6-6. Six different players scored for Michigan in the half.

UCLA rattled off four-straight goals, opening up a 10-6 lead to start the second stanza.

Michigan answered with a three-goal run of its own to get within a goal but UCLA scored twice and controlled the ball over the final five minutes of the game to earn the victory.

Michigan will take on #3 Colorado tomorrow at 11:30 AM ET and #7 Cal Poly later in the day at 10:00 PM ET. Colorado finished as the runners-up last season at WDIA Nationals while Cal Poly has won at nationals seven of the nine years that the tournament has been held.

Game Notes: The win was UCLA's first in three tries against Michigan...The Wolverines defeated the Bruins twice last season including once during the UCSB Shootout...Junior Amanda Schutte was a high school teammate of two Bruins, Lauren Aruiniello and Erica Zug at La Costa Canyon High School in San Diego...With her first goal of the season, Johnson extended her own program record for goals and points to 125 and 157, respectively.
