MICHIGAN SWEEPS TOLEDO, ADVANCES 5-0 IN WCLL TOLDEO, OH -- The lady wolverines advance 5-0 in their WCLL record, and 9-2 in their overall record with a 19-2 victory over University of Toledo. Alyson Gilbride and Elise Halajian tied for most points, both recording 5. Gilbride tallied 3 goals and 2 assists while Halajian had 2 goals and 3 assists. Jane Friend added another 4 goals.O'Brien, Anderson, and Stilec all contributed 2 goals and Milford, Finkenstaedt, McTaggart, and Hinz each added one. Eight of Michigan's 19 goals were assisted; meaning 50% of the goals are scored on pass plays. The wolverines' next competition is Saturday, April 12th versus Ohio State at University of Toledo. UCLA BUMPS WOLVERINES TO #3 SPOT (4/3/03) -- The Michigan Wolverines move to #3 in the intercollegiate national poll. Previously ranked #3 UCLA moves up to the #2 spot with a 9-1 overall record. Entering their season at a #11 rank, Michigan has remained in the top 5 since their season opener at University of North Carolina's South of the Border Tournament. WIN OVER NAVY ADVANCES MICHIGAN TO #2 IN NATIONAL RANKINGS (3/23/03) --A win over #3 Navy moves the Wolverines from a previous #4 ranking to the #2 place in the WDIA National Rankings for 3/23/03. Although Michigan was defeated by #10 Loyola, their win over Delaware, and Delaware's victory over Loyola helped secure Michigan's advancement. WOLVERINES RECORD CHANGES TO 8-2 WITH A 3-1 WEEKEND RECORD Saturday, March 22nd ANNAPOLIS, MD --The Wolverines' overall record changes to 8-2 as the women record a 3-1 record from their weekend of games in Annapolis, Maryland. The ladies passed #10 Delaware in their weekend opener. Danielle Zwirn led the attack with 4 goals, and a key play in the last minutes of the game to put the Wolverines on top. Other scores came from midfielder Meghan Milford (2 goals, 1 assist) and Alyson Gilbride (1 goal, 2 assists). Mina Hong and Jane Friend also contributed points with one goal apiece. In their second game of the weekend the Wolverines tallied another win with a 17-3 triumph over Georgetown. Twelve players contributed points. Captain Elise Halajian recorded 4 goals and Maggie Stilec added another 3 and 1 assist. Jessie Simmons and Danielle Zwirn had 2 goals.Other scores came from Friend, Anderson, Gilbride, Hinz, O'Brien, Finkenstaedt, and Colgan, contributing one goal each. Michelle Adebayo tallied 1 assist. Sunday, March 23rd ANNAPOLIS, MD -- Michigan suffered a tough loss against #14 Loyola. Friend scored 3 goals and Milford and Gilbride both added 2; however, the Wolverines could not pull away with a victory. Loyola scored early goals and the Wolverines trailed the majority of the game. The loss is only their second of the season, with an early loss to WDIA returning champions Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Karen Anderson and Mina Hong both recorded one goal. In their final game of the weekend, Michigan racked another win with a 10-7 victory over #3 Navy. The wolverines scored the first goal of the game, and maintained control throughout the majority. A strong defensive effort shut down Navy's attack to only 2 goals in the first half. Meghan Milford led the attack with 3 goals and 1 assist.Other points were scored by Alyson Glibride (2 goals, 1 assist), Mina Hong (2 goals), Jane Friend (1 goal, 2 assists), Karen Anderson (1 goal), and Lesley Guidotti (1 goal). Haley Sawyer and Sandy Shargabian each tallied one assist. Goalie Jackie Fu played outstanding, making some key saves at the end of the game. The win over Navy should advance the wolverines in the intercollegiate national poll. Gilbride and Friend tied for the most points of the weekend, tallying 10 each. Milford followed shortly behind with a total of 9.The wolverines advance to an overall record of 8-2, remaining 4-0 in their league (WCLL). UM WOMEN'S LACROSSE SWEEPS WEEKEND, RUNS RECORD TO 5-1 ANN ARBOR -- Sophomore Alyson Gilbride, playing in her first collegiate games in Oosterbaan Fieldhouse, scored eight goals and junior Jane Friend added five goals and six assists, as the University of Michigan women's lacrosse team ran its record to 5-1 with four wins this weekend. Michigan defeated Oakland University, 17-0 Friday and then downed University of Missouri, 7-3; University of Illinois, 17-1; and Purdue University, 8-1 during a Saturday round robin tournament. The Wolverines, currently ranked No. 4 in the intercollegiate national poll, used an assortment of lineups during the four games - all with similarly successful results. The offense certainly clicked, hitting for 49 goals in the four games. Just as impressive was the 28 assists Michigan recorded, meaning 57% of UM's goals were assisted. Gilbride was the only player to score in all four games. She had two goals against Oakland and Illinois, one against Missouri and a team-high three against Purdue. Freshman Karen Anderson scored six goals on the weekend, including a team-high three against Oakland. Jen O'Brien added five goals, including two each against Oakland and Illinois. Michigan next plays on Saturday, March 22, when they will travel to Annapolis, MD for three games, including contents against No. 2- ranked Navy, No. 11 Delaware and 16th-ranked Loyola. Women's lax goes 1-1 at season opener The University of Michigan Women's Lacrosse season-opener was February 15 against Clemson. In an offensive display that even surprised the coaching staff, Michigan won, 18-1. Danielle Zwirn and Alyson Gilbride led the team with three goals each. In all, 10 players scored goals and 11 players contributed points. Jane Friend led all point scorers with five points, on a goal and four assists. Other goal scorers were: Kate Finkenstaedt, Meghan Milford, Karen Anderson, Claire McTaggert (2 goals each), Mina Hong, Elise Halajian and Jen O'Brien (1 each). As good as the offense was in the first game, the defense was equally impressive in the second. Playing under the lights in cold, rainy conditions Saturday night, Michigan took on No. 1-ranked Cal-Poly SLO. In a great game, Michigan fell 5-4, but the effort, especially in only the second game of the year, was outstanding. The defense was awesome, holding Cal-Poly scoreless for the first 20-some minutes of the game. Goalie Jackie Fu was fabulous, recording 18 saves. Once again, Danielle Zwirn led the attack with two goals. Karen Anderson and Claire McTaggert each had one. While the loss dropped the team's record to 1-1 on the year, Cal-Poly is the defending intercollegiate club champion. Weather forced cancellation of the entire second day of the tournament. Michigan next plays on March 7 at 9 p.m. against Oakland University in Oosterbaan Fieldhouse. 2003 Practice Schedule Practices are in the Oosterbaan Fieldhouse.
