Wolverines Drop Consolation Game The 5th seeded University of Michigan women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-8 decision to 9th seeded Arizona State in both team's consolation game of the USL-MDIA National Championship Tournament in Blaine, Minnesota on Saturday morning, May 14. Michigan fell behind 5-2 early in the first half before clawing back and grabbing a 7-5 lead midway through the second half. The Sun Devils put together an impressive run in latter part of the second frame however, and outscored Michigan 8-1 down the stretch to pick up the win. Junior midfielder Clair McTaggert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich Academy) led all scorers with 1-2-3, while junior midfielder Michelle Adebayo (Detroit, Mich./Sacred Heart) added two goals for the only other Wolverine to record a multi-point game. Adebayo also paced the team with four groundballs, and senior captain Alyson Gilbride (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaker Heights) won four draw controls in the contest. Under heavy pressure, senior goaltender Jackie Fu (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) finished with a career-high 21 saves in the game. Michigan Falls in Quarterfinals The 5th seeded University of Michigan women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-4 decision to 4th seeded Cal-Poly in the quarterfinal round of the USL-WDIA National Championship on Friday, May 13 in Blaine, Minnesota. The result was Michigan's third season-ending loss to Cal-Poly in the past three years. The Mustangs opened a 6-0 lead on the Wolverines, and a 8-1 lead before halftime. The Maize and Blue struck first to open the second-half, but couldn't claw back into the game with their 2005 campaign coming to a close. Freshman midfielder Ashley Steitz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./University Liggett) led the Wolverines with two goals, while sophomore attacker Noelle Frazier (Richmond Heights, OH/ Hathaway Brown) and senior captain Alyson Gilbride (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaker Heights) each added a goal. Gilbride also led the team with eight groundballs and three draw controls. Wolverines Grab Opening Round Win The 5th seeded University of Michigan women's lacrosse team dominated the Rhode Island Rams by a score of 20-5 in an opening round win at the USL-WDIA National Championship Tournament. In a combination of high winds and sleet, Michigan looked a little sluggish at first, with the the Wolverines trailing 3-2 early on. The Maize and Blue settled things down however and rattled off nine unanswered goals heading into the second half to pull away. Senior midfielder Jackie Day (South Salem, N.Y.) and sophomore attacker Noelle Frazier (Richmond Heights, OH/ Hathaway Brown) provided the early comeback for U-M, notching the first four goals between them, but nine different Wolverines scored as the Wolverines advanced to the quarterfinal round on Friday. Head coach Mary Ann Meltzer was pleased with the Wolverines effort after giving up three early goals, "I thought we played well as a team, they got those three quick goals, but after that we completed dominated. I think our press worked really well." Senior captains Karen Anderson (Needham, Mass./Needham), and Alyson Gilbride (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaker Heights) and Noelle Frazier all recorded five points a piece with Anderson notching five goals Gilbride notching 2-3-5, and Frazier finishing with 4-1-5. Gilbride also led Michigan with six shots, four free- position shots, and seven draw controls. According to Meltzer, the squad was a little stagnant to start off, "I think that at first we we're moving around enough and were just standing around but we got things going and working in our offense and moving the ball around." Junior midfielder Michelle Adebayo (Detroit, Mich./Sacred Heart) and junior defenseman Sandra Shargabian (Rochester Hills, Mich./Sacred Heart) both led the team with five groundballs. Senior goaltender Jackie Fu (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) stopped five shots in the contest and kept the Rams at bay in the first half as the Wolverines built their lead, as Alana Rubin (Worchester, Mass./Bancroft) recorded four saves in relief. Michigan will take on the fourth seeded Cal-Poly at 10:00 am on Friday, May 13 in the quarterfinal round. Last season the Wolverines dropped a 8-7 decision to Cal-Poly in the semi-finals, following a semi-final loss to Cal Poly in 2003. Meltzer looks forward to another shot vs. the Mustangs, "We'd love to get that one back after the past two years and get this monkey off our back. We're just excited to be here. I think we're playing better than we have all year and our attack is really clicking. Defensively we're really working on our slides and our double teams." Maize and Blue Prepare for Nationals Ranked 10th in the Laxpower.com rankings, and 12th in the latest WDIA poll, the University of Michigan women's lacrosse team earned a #5 seed and a date with #12 seed Rhode Island in their opening game of the USL-WDIA National Championships in Blaine, Minnesota. The Wolverines will take to the field on Thursday, May 12 at 9:00 on field C3 vs. the Rams of Rhode Island. Rhode Island enters with a record of 9-1 in the regular season. With a victory, Michigan will play the winner of #4 Cal Poly vs. #13 Texas A&M on Friday at 10:00 am. Maize and Blue Win WCLL Playoffs The 8th ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team defeated three opponents on Saturday, April 23 en-route to a fourth consecutive WCLL Championship, and an automatic bid to the USL-WDIA National Championships. With the three wins, Michigan improved their record to 14-3, with 14 straight wins after starting the season 0-3. In the day's opening action, the Wolverines grabbed a 8-2 victory over rival Ohio State. Senior captains Karen Anderson (Needham, Mass./Needham), and Alyson Gilbride (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaker Heights) and freshman Natalie Cochran (West Bloomfield, Mich./Sacred Heart) paced the Wolverines with two goals apiece, while Senior goaltender Jackie Fu (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) stopped seven shots in the contest. The Wolverines didn't slow up in their second contest, taking care of Indiana, 14-1. Freshman midfielder Ashley Steitz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./University Liggett) led the Wolverines with three goals, while two players recorded 1-3-4, Alyson Gilbride and Natalie Cochran. Jackie Fu finished with three saves no goals against, with Alana Rubin (Worchester, Mass./Bancroft) recording two saves and allowing one goal in relief. In Michigan's tightest contest of the day, U-M defeated Buffalo 9-3 in the title game to earn the WCLL crown. Gilbride added 3-1-4, while Michelle Adebayo (Detroit, Mich./Sacred Heart) added two goals and one assist for three points. Fu was solid in net for Michigan, stopping five shots in the contest. Wolverines Defeat Intra-State Rival The 10th ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team grabbed their 11th straight victory on Wednesday, April 13, defeating the Michigan State Spartans by a score of 16-7 at Grosse Pointe South High School. Sophomore attacker Noelle Frazier (Richmond Heights, OH/ Hathaway Brown) provided the brunt of the scoring for the Maize and Blue, notching five goals. Freshman midfielder Ashley Steitz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./University Liggett) notched three goals, while senior captain Alyson Gilbride (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaker Heights) contributed with 2-2-4 while also winning 10 draw controls. Once again, Michelle Adebayo (Detroit, Mich./Sacred Heart) paced the squad with five groundballs and was all over the field making plays. In net, Senior goaltender Jackie Fu (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) stopped three shots and allowed four goals, while Alana Rubin (Worchester, Mass./Bancroft) recorded one save and allowed three goals. The team will have a week and a half off before competing in the WCLL Playoffs in Toledo on April 23, 2005. Wolverines Take Two, Then Three On Saturday, the University of Michigan women's lacrosse team grabbed two victories, defeating Toledo 19-0, and winning 15-4 over Ohio State. Michigan one-upped themselves on Sunday grabbing three victories, rolling past John Carroll 16-1, defeating Bowling Green 15-2 and shutting out Ball State by a score of 15-0. Throughout the entire weekend the defense was stellar, working well in the double-team and limiting their opponents shot selection and totals. With the five victories over the course of the weekend at the Albion Tournament, the Wolverines improved their record to 10-3. Versus John Caroll, senior captain Karen Anderson (Needham, Mass./Needham) notched four goals, while junior midfielder Jen O'Brien (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) finished with 2-3-5 totals. Freshman midfielder Ashley Steitz (Grosse Pointe,Mich./University Liggett) added 2-1-3, while sophomore attacker Noelle Frazier (Richmond Heights, OH/ Hathaway Brown) finished with one goal and one assist. Freshman midfielder Natalie Cochran (West Bloomfield, Mich./Sacred Heart) contributed with two assists. Junior midfielder Molly Colgan (Lyme, NH/Hanover) led the team with five groundballs while Alana Rubin (Worchester, Mass./Bancroft) and freshman Stephanie Houh (Washington, D.C./National Cathedral) split time with Rubin recording seven saves and Houh stopping three shots and allowing the lone goal. In the 15-2 win over BGSU, Natalie Cochran (3-0-3) and Ashley Steitz (2-1-3) each added three points, while Kate Finkenstaedt (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South), Noelle Frazier and junior midfielder Clair McTaggert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich Academy) each notched two goals. Wolverines Edge D-III Denison, 13-12 The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team defeated Division III opponent, Denison by a score of 13-12 in Granville, Ohio on Wednesday, April 6 to grab their fifth win in a row. Senior captain Alyson Gilbride (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaker Heights) paced the squad with three goals and one assist, while junior midfielder Molly Colgan (Lyme, NH/Hanover) contributed three goals of her own. Both senior captain Karen Anderson (Needham, Mass./Needham) and freshman midfielder Natalie Cochran (West Bloomfield, Mich./Sacred Heart) recorded two goals, while sophomore attacker Noelle Frazier (Richmond Heights, OH/ Hathaway Brown) finished with one goal and two assists. Michigan Finishes Weekend Perfect The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team finished a perfect weekend in a perfect fashion, shutting out Albion, 15-0 on Sunday, March 20 at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse in Ann Arbor. With the win, U-M is above .500 for the first time this year at 4-3. Senior captain Alyson Gilbride (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaker Heights) and freshman midfielder Ashley Steitz (Grosse Pointe,Mich./University Liggett) both contributed 3-1-4 totals, while freshman midfielder Natalie Cochran (West Bloomfield, Mich./Sacred Heart) recorded 2-2-4 herself. Freshman midfielder Abbie Nurse (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and junior midfielder Molly Colgan (Lyme, NH/Hanover) led the team with three groundballs. Senior goaltender Jackie Fu (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) recorded three saves in the game, while freshman Stephanie Houh (Washington, D.C./National Cathedral) recorded one save in her time. Michigan will have almost three weeks off before visiting Denison University on April 6 at 4:00pm. Wolverines Dominate at Invitational The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team continued their climb back to .500 with two dominating efforts on Saturday, defeating Baylor 19-2 in the afternoon and trouncing Central Michigan 20-1 in the final game of the evening. With the two victories the Maize and Blue propelled themselves to 3-3, after starting 0-3. In the early action, sophomore attacker Noelle Frazier (Richmond Heights, OH/ Hathaway Brown) paced the Wolverines with 4-1-5 totals and registering six shots on goal. Freshman midfielder Ashley Steitz (Grosse Pointe,Mich./University Liggett) led the team with three assists while also notching a goal of her own. Junior midfielders Clair McTaggert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich Academy) and Michelle Adebayo (Detroit, Mich./Sacred Heart) each notched three goals of their own in the contest. Junior midfielder Molly Colgan (Lyme, NH/Hanover) led the team with five groundballs in the contest, with senior captain Alyson Gilbride (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaker Heights) earning 11 draw controls. 2005 Pre-Season Player of the Year, senior goaltender Jackie Fu (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) was only forced to make one save in the contest during her half of play, while freshman Stephanie Houh (Washington, D.C./National Cathedral) recorded two saves in her time. In their second action of the day, the Wolverines performed just as well, jumping all over newly formed Central Michigan, winning 20-1. Led by a balanced scoring effort, Michigan had seven players record at least three total points. Senior captain Karen Anderson (Needham, Mass./Needham) finished with 3-3-6 totals, while both Alyson Gilbride and junior midfielder Jen O'Brien (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) finished with 2-3-5 totals. Michelle Adebayo finished with five groundballs, seven draw controls, two interceptions and three shots on goal for a nice all-around effort. Both Jackie Fu and Stephanie Houh finished with three saves a-piece during their halves of play. Michigan Opens Home Weekend with a Bang The University of Michigan women's lacrosse grabbed their first win of the 2005 season with a 21-0 drubbing of intrastate rival Oakland on Friday, March 18 at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines opened a quick 4-0 lead just five minutes into the game and never looked back. A number of U-M women laxers had big nights, led by freshman midfielder Ashley Steitz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./University Liggett) who finished with 5-1-6 totals. Fellow freshman Natalie Cochran (West Bloomfield, Mich./Sacred Heart) tallied 4-2-6 totals. 2005's leading scorer, senior captain Alyson Gilbride (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaker Heights), added to her totals finishing with 3-2-5. Gilbride currently paces the squad with 8-3-11 totals in '05. Junior midfielder Michelle Adebayo (Detroit, Mich./Sacred Heart) continued her solid play on both sides of the ball, notching her first goal of the year and adding to her team lead of 18 groundballs scooping up two in the contest. Junior Molly Colgan (Lyme, NH/Hanover) and senior captain Kate Finkenstaedt (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) both led the squad with five groundballs in the game. The Wolverines will take to the field again on Saturday, March 19 for the Michigan Invitational where the Maize and Blue will take on Baylor and Central Michigan in two games starting at 3:45pm and 8:45pm respectively at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse in Ann Arbor. Wolverines Drops Openers in California The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team dropped both games on Saturday in California to kickoff the 2005 campaign. Falling 8-3 to Santa Clara in their opening game and 14-7 in the second game of the day vs. Santa Barbara, the Wolverines dropped a 13-9 result vs. Colorado State University on Sunday morning. Scoring for the Maize and Blue in the first game was senior captain Alyson Gilbride (Cleveland, OH./Shaker Heights), junior midfielder Molly Colgan (Lyme, NH./Hanover), and freshman Ashley Steitz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./University Ligget). Senior midfielder Jackie Day (South Salem, N.Y.) paced the squad with six groundballs while pre-season player of the year, senior goaltender Jackie Fu (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) finished with eight saves in the game. In the Wolverines second contest of the day, sophomore attacker Noelle Frazier (Richmond Heights, OH/ Hathaway Brown) notched four goals while Gilbride, Steitz and senior captain Karen Anderson (Needham, Mass./Needham) each tallied a goal apiece. Michelle Adebayo (Detroit, Mich./Sacred Heart) led the team with six groundballs while Jackie Fu was tested throughout and made 14 saves. On Sunday, the squad fell 13-9 to Colorado State. Jacke Fu finished the game with 11 saves, while senior goaltender Alana Rubin (Worchester, Mass./Bancroft) recorded one save in relief. The Maize and Blue won't take to the field again until March 18 vs. Oakland at the Oosterbaan Fieldhouse in Ann Arbor. Wolverines Garner Pre-Season #1 Ranking For the second time this pre-season, the University of Michigan women's lacrosse team has earned a pre-season honor, being named the 2005 pre-season #1 ranked team in the country according to the U.S. Lacrosse Women's Division Intercollegiate Association (USL-WDIA). U-M is followed by UC-Santa Barbara, Cal Poly, Navy, and Santa Clara to round out the top-5. Earlier this year, senior goaltender Jackie Fu (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) was named the WDIA Pre-Season Player of the Year. According to Lacrosse Magazine's Gabriel Valenzuela, "Perhaps their (U-M) greatest carry-over is the Defensive MVP of the 2004 National Championship, Jackie Fu. Fu brings experience, controlled clears, and quick reflexes to an already established defense." Fu Earns National Pre-Season Honor Senior goaltender Jackie Fu (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) was named the WDIA Pre-Season Player of the Year for the upcoming 2005 season after earning Defensive MVP honors at the 2004 WDIA National Championships in St. Louis, Missouri. In 2003, Fu was also named the team's Defensive MVP and the Unsung Hero. 2004-05 Captains and Rosters Announced The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team announced their finalized rosters and captains over the weekend. The 24-player squad will be captained by junior midfielder Karen Anderson (Needham, Mass./Needham), senior midfielder Kate Finkenstaedt (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) and senior midfielder Alyson Gilbride (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights).
