2013 Season Recaps Michigan 2013 Spring Season Wrap-Up The team had their end-of-the-season banquet on Saturday night, and it was a nice wrap-up of the season. There are 4 players who played their last season with the team this year: Seniors Jamee Jacobson, Claire Gadra, and Rachel Stattler, as well as ("rookie") Grad student Stephanie Gerretsen. While it was a somewhat disappointing trip to Nationals where the team went 1-3, it was a great experience for the team to get to compete against the best teams in the country, and to get to spend another week with their best friends, playing their favorite sport, in Colorado. In addition, for the 17 players who return; the experience was invaluable as they all got great "big game" experience. Everyone played a lot in every game, and the team is excited to regroup for next year. The following Wolverines were given team awards at the Banquet: Defense MVP: Jamee Jacobson (Chicago, IL/Lake Forest), Midfield MVP: Julianne Patterson (Rochester, NY/Victor), Attack MVP: Katie Mezwa (Rochester Hills, MI/Sacred Heart), Rookie of the Year: Ellen Manson (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian), Most Improved: Sydney Franko (Farmington, MI/St.Mary's Academy), and Coaches' Award: Val Van Hulle (Cleveland, OH/Magnificat). In addition, Jamee Jacobson (Chicago, IL/Lake Forest) was also named to the "WCLA All-Tournament Team" for the 2nd time in her career; Jamee also earned this distinction in 2011 (her Sophomore year).
Michigan cannot complete comback against #6 seed Virginia The Wolverines played a strong UVA team in their final game at Nationals, and found themselves down 6-13 at the half. Michigan mounted a strong comeback, and battled back within 2 several times, but they could not complete the comeback, and lost by a final score of 15-17. This was their final game of Nationals, and the Wolverines finished in 14th place. Considering there were more "rookies" than returners on this years' team, it was a productive rebuilding year as every player got great big-game experience this year and that should be the foundation for success in upcoming years. Michigan wins 3rd game against Northeastern The Wolverines were happy to see a change in the weather on Friday, which also coincided with a solid victory. The fields were still wet from the previous days of rain, but at least the rain didn't fall during the game -- for the first time since arriving in Colorado. Michigan lead nearly the entire game, and finished with a comfortable score of 16-9. The Wolverines play again at 8am (MST) against #6 seeded Virginia, on Saturday morning. Michigan fails to connect again The Wolverines found themselves in another miserable game this afternoon, with terrible (grass) field conditions resulting from the on/off rain that has been falling for much of the last 2 days. Unfortunately, the weather got the best of 2 of their starting Seniors, who got injured due to the unfortunate playing conditions today (Rachel Stattler/hamstring and Jamee Jacobson/concussion). Maryland managed to convert and got the 2nd round win, with a final score of 13-7. Michigan looks to come up with a win as they face Northeastern tomorrow at 11am (MST). Texas hands Michigan an opening round loss The #12-seeded Wolverines opened their 2013 Nationals' Tournament against #5-seeded Texas, and unfortunately, were not able to pull off the upset. Though the Wolverines started with a strong 3-0 lead to open the game, Texas was able to tie the game at 3, and then went into halftime with a 6-5 lead. After halftime, it was Texas who went on a scoring run, as they went up 11-6 in the 2nd half. Michigan battled back to within 2, but time expired before they could finish their comeback. The final score was 9-11, and Michigan plays Maryland tomorrow at 4pm (MST). Academic All-Americans Announced Junior Nana Kikuchi (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Cranbrook) is the lone Wolverine to earn the National distinction of "Academic All-American" this year. She also earned this award last year as a Sophomore. Nana is a dual degree student who will graduate with a BBA (Bachelor in Business Administration) and a BS (Bachelor of Science) in Financial Mathematics. Wolverines earn Distinction in Nationals' Award Ceremony The regular season awards continued for the Wolverines at the National Tournament Opening Ceremony as the All-American Teams and Player of the Year awards were announced. This year, Michigan placed one player on both the 1st and 2nd All-American Teams. Congratulations to junior Julianne Patterson (Rochester, NY/Victor) for being named 1st Team All-American as a Midfielder. Additionally, congratulations go to senior captain Jamee Jacobson (Chicago, Ill./Lake Forest) for being named a 2nd Team All-American Defender. These two players have shown outstanding effort and skill throughout the year and are very deserving of their accolades; they have made their team, friends, and family very proud. Michigan is Headed to Nationals After a season of ups and downs, filled with hard-fought games, exhilirating victories and some tough losses, the Michigan Wolverines are honored to have received a bid to the National Tournament. Michigan enters Nationals as the #12 overall seed. They begin the tournament on Wednesday May 8th against the #5 seeded Texas Longhorns. The Wolverines may be a young team with little National Tournament experience, but they have the talent to compete at the highest level, and are excited at the opportunity to do so. All-Conference Awards Announced We would like to recognize the great accomplishments by some of our individual athletes this year. The All-Conference Honors have recently been released and the Michigan Wolverines have players that made the 1st Team, 2nd Team, and Honorable Mention All-Conference teams. The Michigan players on the rosters are as follows; 1st Team: 2nd Team: Honorable Mention: Additionally, one of our players has been named the WCLL Conference Rookie of the Year. Congratulations to Ellen Manson on the great honor and season. Congrats again to these players on a highly accomplished season and for receiving such great honors. Michigan falls short of Conference Title goal in Columbus, OH The #2 seed Michigan Wolverines entered last weekend with the hopes of leaving Columbus, OH named Regional Tournament Champions. The weekend started off on a good note as they handled the #7 Toledo Rockets with relative ease. They played with great effort and intensity throughout the game to claim a 14-6 victory. The team then advanced to a Semifinal matchup against the #3 seed Ohio State Buckeyes. The Wolverines offense struggled for the majority of the first half, and they fell behind 7-1 at the half. The Wolverines made a valiant effort as they managed a comeback, but fell short and lost 7-8. The Wolverines are hoping to continue their season via an At-Large bid to Nationals. WCLL conference tournament update (Saturday/Sunday, April 20/21) #2 seed-Michigan won their first round game this afternoon against the #7 seed, Toledo, by a score of 14-6. Sunday morning, Michigan plays the #3 seed, Ohio State in the Semi-Final game, who beat #6 Ohio University in their first round game. #1 Pittsburgh advanced easily in their first round game against #8 seed Wisconsin, and #4 MSU had an exciting comeback victory over #5 seed, West Virginia. The top 4 seeds all advance to the semifinals on Sunday. Michigan earns the #2 seed for the WCLL conference tournament Michigan heads to Columbus this weekend (April 20-21) to compete for the WCLL conference tournament championship. They are the #2 seed and will play #7 Toledo in the first round game at 4pm on Saturday afternoon. If they win, they will play in the semi-final game at 10am on Sunday, against the winner of the #3/#6 game (Ohio State/Ohio U.) The lists include the top players across both divisions of collegiate club lacrosse and highlights the early contenders for the 2013 player of the year awards. Julianne was a 2nd team All-American selection last year as a sophomore, and is having a strong season again this year. She leads the Wolverines in total points, assists, draws, and caused turnovers. Pittsburgh was the victor in the first game, but the Wolverines rallied and came out on top against Ohio State. The team followed this up with their last home game of the season, against visiting #7-ranked Minnesota. It was a close game, and Michigan hung on for the win. The team is awaiting news of the seeding for the conference tournament next weekend in Columbus. Wolverines wrap up their regular season games this weekend Michigan travels to Akron, Ohio to play #9 Pittsburgh and #10 Ohio State on Saturday, April 6th. The neutral host site is Archbishop Hoban High School. The team then travels home Saturday night (in time to watch the big Final 4 basketball game), and returns to action in Ann Arbor on Sunday morning as they host #7 Minnesota at 11am, at Elbel Field. Michigan comes up short in Colorado The Wolverines had a challenging weekend tournament in Boulder and, unfortunately, finished the weekend 0-4. They played four games in 48 hours, including games against #1 Colorado State and #2 BYU. Rounding out the weekends' games were opponents UC-Santa Clara, and host CU-Boulder. Michigan competed well in every game, but in each game, found themselves down in the closing minutes and couldn't complete the comeback. The Wolverines have 2 practices this week before a big weekend of games against Pitt, Ohio State, and Minnesota. Michigan heads to Boulder for Mile High Invitational The Wolverines head West this weekend to play 4 strong opponents March 29-31. They open against BYU on Friday afternoon, and are slated to face Santa Clara and #1 Colorado State on Saturday. Wrapping up their tough weekend against the home team Colorado, Michigan hopes to come away with some top quality wins. This is a great challenge for the team as they play these four games within 48 hours, and are hoping their fitness is good enough to play well in the challenging high-altitude environment. This tournament should be great preparation for Nationals, should the Michigan team be fortunate enough to be invited to compete in the final tournament of the season, in Colorado Springs, in May. Wolverines finish mid-season home stretch undefeated Michigan played their final home game of the season in the Oosterbaan Fieldhouse tonight, and came away with a solid victory over Oakland University. The final score was 19-6, and that win wrapped up an undefeated home streak in the Oosterbaan Fieldhouse this Spring (5-0). The team is off of games and has a week of practices before heading to Boulder next weekend for the Mile High Invitational (Mar. 28-31). Good show for Parents' Weekend The Wolverines had an exciting double-header on Saturday afternoon, where they squared off against region-opponents Western Michigan and Michigan State. The first game proved to be a nice warmup after Spring Break, and Michigan had a solid performance -- winning by a score of 24-1. After about an hour break, Michigan stepped back on the field to face rival Michigan State, and again, managed the win -- though it wasn't big or pretty. The Spartans were a much-improved team, playing with tremendous heart and aggressiveness, and gave the Wolverines a great fight. Though the game was close a few times, Michigan never trailed, and finished the game on top, with a final score of 11-7. Michigan is back in action again on Tuesday, March 19, as they host Oakland University at 8:45pm. Michigan on Break until March 11th The Wolverines had a strong start to their season, with a 5-1 record going into their Spring Break which runs from March 1-10. The players will be back to campus on Sunday, March 10, and will look to have a couple of strong practices before their upcoming Parents' Weekend event on Saturday, March 16th. Michigan has a double header that day, starting with a 4pm game against Western Michigan, and following that up with the headline event at 7pm -- game against rival, Michigan State. This will also serve as "Senior Night" for our 3 seniors: Claire Gadra, Jamee Jacobson, and Rachel Stattler. Michigan handles Miami (OH) and Central Michigan The Wolverines had a strong outing on Saturday afternoon with a commanding victory over Miami (OH). Michigan started strong, going up 6-0 before Miami netted their first goal of the game at 13 minutes into the first half. For the rest of the half, they traded goals, with Michigan leading solidly at halftime by a score of 10-4. The Wolverines continued to dominate the second half, finishing the game up 19-7. Michigan then played host on Sunday afternoon to Central Michigan University, and again put up a solid win. The final score of that game was 14-2. Michigan looks forward to home games this weekend The Wolverines play host to visiting conference opponents Miami of Ohio on Saturday (at 2pm), and Central Michigan on Sunday (at 1pm). In addition, Michigan is hosting a game between Miami and Michigan State following the Michigan-Miami game, which will be played at 5pm on Saturday. Come out for a great day of lacrosse on Saturday, and cheer the Wolverines on in their first home game of the season! Michigan leaves California in high spirits with a 3-1 record and a #3 national ranking The Wolverines have returned home after a trip last weekend to Santa Barbara, CA for the 25th annual Santa Barbara Shootout. Although Michigan did not manage a sweep, they still finished the weekend with a strong 3-1 record. The Wolverines' one loss came against a very athletic and talented Georgia Bulldog team that finished the weekend 4-0. Santa Barbara Shootout: The Wolverines head West over the weekend of February 14-17 to face some of the nation's best competition in the 25th annual Santa Barbara Shootout. They open the weekend against #11 UCLA on Friday afternoon, and then face #14 Cal Poly and #9 Georgia on Saturday, and wrap up the weekend against host UC Santa Barbara on Sunday.
