Oh boy. Now that work's almost over, I can go home to no power and no heat. That is unless I wipe out on the way there.

I just finished a conversation with my coworkers and boss about porn, of all things.

I got my truck back this morning -- it looks great, and they cleaned the interior.

EXCEPT that they left off the "Sport" decal on the side. This would normally not be a problem for me except that the dealer would probably like that to be there when the lease is up. They'll replace it by the end of the week.

    Quick hits today:

    - You probably saw it in the Blogs of Note, but Tom Tomorrow redid the TMW site, now powered by blogger

    - The Geek Hierarchy. I know some people about four levels deep

    - Here's a fun game: Catapult

    - Jiffy Movie Review : Count of Monte Cristo, 3 of 5 stars. A fun popcorn movie. Tell someone the book is as fun as the movie and run away when they test that theory

I had a dream about Nuclear War this morning. I knew it was a dream since I was at a Red Wings game where they were playing outdoors, and I was following somebody I went to high school with up some wooden scaffolding while looking for my (nonexistent) hockey gloves. However, in the middle of this dream nonsense there was a great rumbling in the sky, and I watched a missle (obviously a nuke) drop from the sky into the nearby ocean (?) -- and then I woke up.

I think I lie there for about thirty seconds disoriented, confused and a little spooked until I fully woke up. I don't think I'd ever dreamt or fealt like that even in the depths of the 80's cold war or even after watching The Day After. I'm not sure what to make of it, save that I'm married now and will sometime along the way raise some children in the world. It's an odd feeling.

On a mostly unrelated note, I'm going to go out running today since it's not freezing. We'll see how this goes.

    QuackWatch

This is great. The Jeers section in the Comments area is hilarious.

I stayed up late to finish off the latest Tom Clancy novel, and I can only conclude that he's turning into a crazy old man. 1100+ pages of awkward and juvenile sex scenes, an exponential increase in swearing from the last 8 books or so, and a lot of right-leaning criticism about the topics of the day and a total excoriation of Chinese culture -- political or otherwise. Not his best work.

I'd forgotten the joys of being without a mode of transportation until turning my car over to the body shop this weekend, where it'll be held hostage for perhaps as much as ten days. I'd lined up a bunch of rides to get to work and back, but, of course, my coworker forgot to pick me up this morning. Ah well.

Here's a goofy Dutch commercial -- be sure to turn the audio down if you're at work, since it's a touch risque.

OK, the flash project should be ready to go. Try it now.

I've been playing with Macromedia's Flash 5 trial package -- check out my weak first attempt. Actually don't bother -- I haven't figured out how to put it in the web page yet.

    Well Helloooooo Mr. Fancy-Pants!

Ugh, the fallout and rigamarole that I'm enduring in getting the truck fixed is pissing me off. I've got all the insurance work done -- and won't be spending any money on -- but the end result of this mess is that I'll be carless while the truck's in the body shop -- which may take a week and a half.

Adding to my frustrations is my ongoing battle with my dental insurance, which isn't doing my much good with the cavities I need to fill. Basically, it'll only pay for all of that work if I get these 80's silver fillings, not the nice fake tooth-substance stuff.

All these added up pretty much kisses Vegas goodbye this year.

Although one positive note is that with the mail going out today I'll be credit-card-debt free for the first time in about six years. Now I can focus on killing off the student loans.

    2001 Internet "Most Searched-On" List

Check out number one -- I guess I'm not the only one that can't understand what's going on there.

After two and three-quarters years of obsessing over keeping my truck in great condition, it only took a light coat of snow and slush for some kid moron to smack into it and ruin everything. Well sure, I'm covered, it was all his fault, it's all cosmetic damage and no one was hurt, but still -- the kid was careless with a vehicle that can easily kill people when used carelessly. In fact, while the kid was stand-up in that he admitted total blame, he was still a bit to cavalier in dismissing the accident. "My insurance will cover it, and it's only a lease," he said.

Well yes, but that doesn't make up for all the bullshit and hoops I'll have to go through with the insurance company, the dealer, and the body shop.

The Myth of the "Liberal" Media

It's hard for me to believe in liberal media bias when there are no fewer than four 24 hour TV stations on the cable here that involve old white guys yelling at democrats.

Happy New Year, everybody. Made some cosmetic changes mostly to the site which you've probably figured out by now. Also, each entry has a timestamp link now, should you need to link to any one particular entry (and God help you if you want to.)

Well, no update to the Book list for 2001, but an informal count... looks like I got about 32 books in last year, almost all either first-times or completions of readings that were never finished in the first place. That's about three a month, which, with TV and video games tempting me for time, is pretty good. Looks like I read most of Clancy's Jack Ryan books, altho I'm proud of the nonfiction and Brother Cadfael that I've gotten into. I'll leave the list up until I have something for 2002 or I revamp the left side info bar.

I don't do resolutions, but I'm going to seriously try to get myself in better shape, since I'm starting to tell that I'm getting older, and if I don't get it done now it's just going to be that much harder later.

Oh, and I want to try to get back to Las Vegas.

Links... Here's a Java version of Settlers of Catan, an addictive board game that's much more fun with live players, but this is the best simulation I've seen of it. While we're on a game kick, here's a throwback to the classic Atari days -- you can play Pitfall! in you web browser (needs Shockwave.)

Hope you all had good celebrations and I wish the best for you in the year to come.
