We're back from Nevada. All I can say right now is that it was very hot -- occasionally obscenely hot -- and that we need a vacation to recover from our vacation.

Oh, one other thing: June Assclown of the Month!

Time to get ready to go. See you next week with stories from Vegas.

    Germany beats "valiant" USA

Very good game to watch this morning even if we lost. The above is a BBC link for an objective view of things, but everyone except maybe Mexico seems to agree that the US should be very proud of their achievements in this World Cup.

That said, unfortunately, I think the public awareness of this team will fade in about 4 months. MLS just doesn't capture the same feeling or essence that World Cup does.

    Get on The Bandwagon!

Looks like yet another idiot organization is "requiring" people to register with them if they want to link to their site.

    I guess I should pre-apologize for the following: www.npr.org e@ts c0k

This weekend I went down to the Underworld looking for a game supplement, and I was shocked and surprised to find that the G.I. JOE and TRANSFORMERS (generation one) comics were back in print! Apparently Marvel sold the rights off to some smaller comic groups who were more than happy to reprint these titles.

These, G.I. JOE especially, were the only comics I really bought on anything nearing a regular basis. I feel like I got back a piece of my childhood.

US beats Mexico 2-0, moves to quarterfinals

Awesome. I gave the US slim chances to defeating Mexico, which looked very strong in the early rounds. But now Germany -- unfortunately, I don't think the Americans have enough magic to beat these guys.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the new Stanley Cup champions.

Well, I got up obscenely early again to watch the US Soccer team play Poland in a game where all that was needed was a draw against one of the weaker teams in the field... and five minutes in we're down 2-zip. Not the best game for the US, who eventually lost 3-1.

Now, this *should* have eliminated us from the second round of the World Cup, but then the even more ridiculous happened -- Portugal, one of the best teams on the planet, only needed a tie against Korea (not one of the best teams, but they had the home field advantage...) yet they managed to get TWO Red Cards, meaning they had to play 9 guys versus 11, and Korea preserved a 1-0 win, so the US advanced anyway. Jeesus pizza.

This was not exactly they way you want to go into the next round, which is an elimination match against Mexico, but you take what you can get, I guess. One thing is for certain -- every goal scored against the US (except the last meaningless Poland goal) was the result of the failure of US player Jeff Agoos. This guy *has* to be benched. He's 34 (which is elderly in soccer years), slow, has no hops, and scored on his own net. In Colombia, that's a death sentence.

Hey, here's another recap for those of us who have trouble getting up in the "morning":

Lots of stuff been piling up here...

  • The Truth About Shaq. Can I get an amen?

  • The White Stripes are a punk band from Detroit that are on the cusp of hitting it big. While their song "Fell In Love with A Girl" is pretty catchy, the video rocks the hizzouse. Even funnier than that, the lead singer agreed to have an interview with a 5 year old named Lucas.

  • Look at CNN showing the RUSH love.

  • Watch the very cool Nike World Cup Secret Tournament ads.

  • My boy Allen created a list of the Principles of Hubie Brown. However, some shitty website blatantly stole the list. Write these motherfuckers at [email protected] and tell them they suck.

    2002 World Cup

I told Julie I was going to get up this morning at 5AM to watch the United States play Portugal in their World Cup Soccer opener.

    "You're crazy," said she.

I don't think so. Especially since the Americans put it to Portugal early and held on for a 3-2 win.

Soccer is not very big in America. We're too used to fast action, high scoring affairs with plenty of commercial breaks. It's strange, too, because soccer is played by more children in this country than any other sport, including the (alleged) national pasttime, baseball. However, once the teen years set in, soccer is pretty much forgotten. No national league has been able to catch on and thrive.

To be honest, I can't get into MLS (Major League Soccer, the US national league). I can only really get excited by World Cup, since you have the very best players in the world on a national stage. Arguments against soccer usually boil down to "There's just a bunch of 0-0 ties" or "Buncha foreign guys I don't know." It's all hooey, though. The 3-2 game this morning was exciting. Hell, the 1-0 win by Senegal over France was a monster upset -- the populace of Senegal was dancing in the streets and it was declared a national holiday!

Those two games in particular sum up why the World Cup is great, and why even though the games are played at 2:30, 5, and 7:30 AM, I'll try to watch as many of them as I can -- as should you.

Whether you've never seen soccer before, or hate sports, you owe it to yourself to give it a look. The American victory will be replayed tonight for your sleepyheads.

    Give it up for Sacramento

Kings cred meter goes way up after this last series, which they would have won if not for bad officiating.

We're headed back to Sin City, baby.
