We have a shocking tie for July's Assclown of the Month: this idiot and this moron.

TMOL gurus meditate on my Birthday Cake.

OK -- not only is this story the greatest Bill Simmons article ever, this may be the greatest article ever in the history of the internet (...by humans). It also combines two of my most favorite things.

My lovely wife's writing journal has been designated a Blog of Note -- we're all proud here.

Over the weekend I was able to put Jedi Knight to rest. I should be able to finish off the original Diablo soon enough. I found an interesting and tough mod for Diablo II that I'll play with when I get a chance.

Julie has agreed to make the Greatest Birthday Cake ever. I can't wait.

    On TV Tonight

I went down to the Underworld again after work to get the newest issues of the resurrected G.I. Joe and Transformers titles.

I like comics, but I'm certainly nowheres near that "I must have every issue and keep them in mint condition, in plastic bags with climate control" mentality. The two titles above are the only ones I ever actually read with any regularity back in the Eighties, and I was lucky to find out about their re-release relatively early in their life. (For example, I got into TF at issue 3, and GI JOE at issue 7.) So it won't be impossible for me to pick up the previous issues to pick up the story -- The Underworld has a bound version of GI JOE 1-4 (printed as "GI JOE Reinstated!") as well as a copy of issue 5; I could just buy them from their GI JOE publisher site. Same thing for issues 1 and 2 of Transformers Generation One.

    Scary Thriller

    Friday, July 19, 2002
I realize now that I've read 4 of the Cadfael novels now without a proper understanding of Cadfael's order of the Benedictine Monks. It doesn't come into play so much as to ruin the experience, but still, I'd probably be better off as an individual if I knew what Vespers or Matins was.

Julie has left me Home Alone tonight. Hope the Wet Bandits don't show up. I'll probably just try to catch the next episode of the excellent Monk. Obsessive-Compulsive. Detective.

    Gaming Update:

  • Finished Might and Magic VI last week

  • Finished Resident Evil: Code Veronica this week

A coworker is playing the original Diablo nearby. I think the town music from that game is the best game-generated melody I've ever heard.

This is a link to Saturday's Weekend Update on SNL. Choose to download the RealVideo, and watch the second half for Chris Parnell. Or else.

Occasionally I will play a little low-stakes poker with some pals. Yesterday I had just about the worst string of luck I've ever had gambling; hand after hand of worthless cards, and even when I was able to put something together, say three jacks, someone would be able to muster three queens. I lost my five bucks and called it a night.

Yesterday I talked to my Dad cause it was his birthday. My folks were somewhere between the out-of-control wildfires in the southwest and the floods of Texas, making their way back from Las Vegas. It's quite a drive, but it would be an interesting trip, because you can hit Rushmore, the Badlands, and Yellowstone on the way out, swing south to Las Vegas, then head east towards the Grand Canyon on the way back.

Yesterday was also Bastille Day. It was also the last day of the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, but I wasn't able to catch any ESPN2 coverage like last year. ESPN2 is great -- where else can you see live coverage of running of the bulls, lumberjack games, Wolrd Series of Poker and World Magic: the Gathering Championships.

Julie and I saw Reign of Fire on Saturday. Time for a ten words or less review:
It was a pretty average summer movie.

I came to the University of Michigan on a partial teaching scholarship, transferred into the School of Education when I was eligible, and graduated from that school with honors.

But this is why I'm not a teacher.

Here I am at work. I have no sympathy for our callers today -- it's beautiful outside, go talk a walk or something.

Last night Julie and I were driving around after running an errand, and I swear, I think I saw more fireworks go off last night than I had in the last five years combined. I think it had something to do with the terrorists already having won, or something like that.

I finished off Devil May Cry last night; I figured I shouldn't let a year go by without cleaning up on at least one PS2 game.

    That is all, citizens!

Hey look, it's really slow comments windows for each post now! Say something (if you can bear the load time).

The average temperature in Las Vegas last week was 107 degrees. "But it's a dry heat!" you might exclaim. After your beating, I'll remind you that while that is true, the sun pounds down on you without mercy. To go without sunblock would be foolhardy. While 107 was the average, it was by no means the high. It was about 115 out at the aptly-named Valley of Fire National Park, and a staggering 121 at Hoover Dam. Hoover DAMN!

Hiding out in the resorts all day would not have been much fun for my other half, so we braved this solar onslaught and survived. I don't even think I got burned.
