Guillermo Aranda , Untitled, 1971 A Chicano man holds two skulls, calaveras, in his hands. Behind him on one side is a Spanish Conquistador plunging a knife into the skull, destroying it, symbolizing the way the conquistadors destroyed the Aztec and Mayan culture. Behind him on the other side is an indigenous person and a plant is sprouting from the skull. The roots are visible, extending down into the skull. These roots indicate the indigenous origins of Chicano culture.
