I watched over the cathedral discretely until I was reasonably sure who the malfeasants were. On the night they planned their attack I descend upon them in town and slaughtered all but the demon Mithail who escape to her celestial form. Her form was that of a hideous flying lizard. My eyes grew wide. It was beginning to dawn on me what I was up against.
As you can imagine Mithail returned, but she would never face me directly. She attacked the church in petty ways: breaking windows, calling church members to false meetings, tainting the food, and so forth. Finally, I was able to get my attunement to work on her. I tracked her down and killed her. To my shock this event made a terrible noise in the symphony. I was reeling. It was all wrong. I remember actually weeping holding the corpse of my opponent. Had I gone crazy?
Such is the nature of the Cherubim attunement. Laurence took pity on me. He called me to heaven and explained the duality of my position. As a Cherubim I was a protector and as his servant I was a destroyer. He told me that I had done well, but never to use my attunement in that fashion again. He removed the dissonance I had felt and returned me to the Earthly Realms where he said I belonged.
I spent a good two hundred on earth doing my best to enforce his will before Laurence spoke to me again.
It was during the Hundred Years War between France and England. At this time battles were clumsy. Leaders were often mediocre and troop morale was typically low on both sides. It was easy to turn the tide of a battle. Even though I did not take sides in this war I protected Pope Benedict's interests on the continent. I was very successful. However, I made a number of enemies of mortals and diabolics alike. As with most things, it caught up with me. In the year thirteen hundred, two score and three I was caught low on Essence after a rigorous campaign, surrounded, and despite getting back up to battle further after three separate mortal wounds I was finally defeated and killed.
I was not surprised to awake months later in Heaven. Laurence was there.
"You are truly stubborn in battle aren't you?" He asked.
I didn't know how to answer.
"Hey, snap out of it, mister!"
I stood up, still speechless.
"You're good down there. Good, but not the best. I will need the best. Times are changing, I can see that. Rarely anymore does the individual change the battle, but the day will come when I will need a single champion. Now get back to earth and master the sword."
"Yes Sir." I turned to leave not knowing how to get back to earth.
"Oh, one more thing. Take this." He tossed a sword to me and I caught it by the hilt. SOULPIERCER echoed deafeningly through my mind. "Kill demons. Protect the innocent." He added before I blacked out.
Laurence has not spoken with me since. (until my recent trip to Heaven) Organizing The War is a difficult and consuming task. It requires nearly his full attention. It's true the I could have used more guidance, but my course is clear.
