This group, which numbers about 15-20, is a competitive performance
ensemble that combines dance, flags, sabres and rifles. The 2001 season
is Winter Guard�s fifth, and their third in Winter Guard International
Competition. They are members of the Michigan Color Guard Circuit. Practices
begin after marching season, in October or November. Performances begin in
January and end in April. Winter Guard families fund-raise most of the
money needed for this activity, and members and their parents are expected
to work concessions at two U-M football games. Families are responsible
for purchasing uniforms; also rifles or sabres if the member wishes to
keep them. The cost for gloves and uniforms in the last few years has been
$50-75. Other costs include meals while on trips and hotel expenses on
their regional trips and World Championship trip. Scott Heister directs
