The purpose of the Nicolaou article was to form the marine neurotoxin, maitoxin, using the ring closing metathesis as its main mechanism. This article is referenced by the Keck article because in the Nicolaou article, the reaction from Molecule 9 to Molecule 10 involves the opening of a ring using an olefination metathesis reaction. The Keck article also uses this reaction for the formation of Molecule 17 from Molecule 16, but in a reverse fashion - the ring in Molecule 16 closes instead of opens through an olefin metathesis reaction.
