Step 1 (Synthesis of Molecule 4 to Molecule 7d):

(0.182 g, 1 mmol) of 7d was dissolved in 10 mL of dichloromethane. The solution was treated with (0.185g, 0.77mmol) of crude Silyl enol ether 4 and was concentrated under reduced pressure and azeotroped twice with toluene. The remaining product was dissolved in anhydrous toluene (5 mL), treated with Yb(OTf)3 (0.025g, 0.04 mmol) at 0°C, and stirred for 2 hours. After reacting for 2 hours, saturated aqueous NaHCO3 was used to quench the reaction. The residual was diluted with hexanes and stirred for 30 minutes. Liquid-Liquid extraction was used to separate the layers. The aqueous layer was removed with hexanes and the combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, and concentrated under reduced pressure.

Step 2 (Synthesis of Molecule 15 to Molecule 7d):

The remaining product was azeotroped twice with toluene and dissolved in recently distilled 1, 2-dichlorobenzene (6mL). The resulting solution was heated for 30 minutes in a microwave reactor at 210 °C. Finally, the product – tricycle 15 – was purified by flash column chromatography on 5.5g silica gel using a 10 mm i.d. chromatographic column (elution with 10% v/v AcOEt in Hexanes).
