Stand in the Gap Praying/Multiplied Strength

 Rev. Jeff Hlevin

Stand in the Gap Praying

Ez 22:24-31 "Son of man, say to her, 'You are a land that is not cleansed or rained on in the day of indignation.' 25 "There is a conspiracy of her prophets in her midst, like a roaring lion tearing the prey. They have devoured lives; they have taken treasure and precious things; they have made many widows in the midst of her. 26 "Her priests have done violence to My law and have profaned My holy things; they have made no distinction between the holy and the profane, and they have not taught the difference between the unclean and the clean; and they hide their eyes from My sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. 27 "Her princes within her are like wolves tearing the prey, by shedding blood [and] destroying lives in order to get dishonest gain. 28 "And her prophets have smeared whitewash for them, seeing false visions and divining lies for them, saying, 'Thus says the Lord God,' when the Lord has not spoken. 29 "The people of the land have practiced oppression and committed robbery, and they have wronged the poor and needy and have oppressed the sojourner without justice. 30 "And I searched for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. 31 "Thus I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; their way I have brought upon their heads," declares the Lord God.

God could not find one person to stand in the gap from among the prophets (verses 24,28), the priests (26), the princes (27), or the people (29) of Israel!

The Hebrew word translated "gap" means a breach or rupture in a military sense. An attacking army tries to open a way for it to gain entrance through a break in the defenses of its opposition. When an opening was made in the wall of a city, the invaders would begin to push through it.

A soldier who would risk life and limb by "standing in the gap" in Order to stop and repel the invasion was considered a hero, It is specifically that kind of intercessory prayer person that God is still looking for today: someone who will stand in the gap until the walls can be rebuilt (Neh 4:78) around a person, congregation, city, state or nation.

  1. A breach in a wall allows satanic intrusion.
  2. A breach in a wall allows people to be captured, fruit to be stolen, and treasure to be plundered.
  3. A breach in a wall allows for demonic strongholds to be setup.

The Principle of Multiplied Strength/Corporate Anointing

"A herd of musk oxen was under attack by a pack of arctic wolves. The wolves were after the young of the herd. As the wolves approached their quarry, the adult musk oxen bunched into an unbroken circle with the young in the center. The oxen's deadly hooves were effective as a barricade against the wolves. As long as they remained in this position of unified resistance, the wolves were held at bay. Then a single ox broke out of the herd, causing the rest to scatter into small groups of two or three. Once scattered, every young calf fell victim to the onslaught of the wolves. Thus, even in nature, we see the importance of corporate unity in intercession." (Quote from "Seasons of Intercession" by Frank Damazio, pg 53.)

Deut 32:30 "How could one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and the Lord had given them up?"

Ec 4:9 "Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. 10 For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. I I Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm [alone?] 12 And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three [strands] is not quickly torn apart."
