    A Pirate Looks at Thirty

So I turn thirty tomorrow. After some consideration and introspection, I've come to the following opinion:

    BIG WHOOP!

I guess I just don't see thirty as a big deal. Forty is probably more meaningful, as you realize that you likely have less years in front of you than you do behind you, but I think the age range between post-college graduation and becoming a grandparent, whether you're 22 or 33 or 44 or 55, doesn't make much of a difference to one as a person. (did that last sentence make any sense?)

Although the speed at which the years are flying by is amazing to me. Was it actually nine years ago that we had the 21st birthday party, with the dwinnmobile cake and the 8.5 zimas?

    Good, Bad, Ugly

    Good
  • Lawnmower shows up today; my folks bought it for us
  • Will completely avoid Art Fair for another year
  • Packing, moving at leisurely pace
    Bad
  • Existence of Art Fair
  • Poker Morons
  • Each day the lawn gets more and more out of hand
    Ugly
  • Yet another Art Fair reference -- "Something Expensive on a Stick"
  • Kids' handprints on stairway wall (in paint of course)
  • The walk from my parking lot to work is fraught with goose shit landmines

Out of the Money (story of my life)

Finished 3rd out of 6 in another NL Hold'dem sit-and-go, just out of the money.

I busted a guy out quick when my pocket fours in the Big Blind turned into trips on the flop and quads on the river.

I bided my time until I was able to cripple another player when I had four to the flush and middle pair on the flop, then made the flush with the turn.

From there, the cards went south, and I found myself in third way behind the two chip leaders, who were just treading water to get in the money.

I know Dann's going to roast me for this play, but I found myself low on chips and I'd noticed that when I was in the small blind, the player to my left in the big blind would consistently raise my bets or calls (in an effort to bust me out, of course). Problem was the shitty cards I was getting -- I'd finally had enough when I was dealt two suited cards for the first time in what seemed ages, but they were 8-4. So I call, BB raises, I call.

Flop comes 8-8-4. I check, BB raises big, I go all-in and he quickly calls; I already have the nuts, but just for emphasis the quad 8 falls on the river. BB is having a fit, "Who plays 8-4?!?!", etc. I make some comment about tiring of being bullied.

Sadly, they both were still double my stack, and I go all in with Q-Jh suited after the flop shows Qc-10h-9h. The Ace of hearts showed up on the turn, but, of course, my opponent had Kh-7h. Made some bonus dollars for playing but lost the price of admission, five fifty. Placing just out of the money bugs me a bit but I'm still happy with my overall play recently. Sit-and-go's have a greater appeal to me than the endless regular play at the tables.
