Nothing More Exciting to Report Than a Bad Meal

I just ate about a third of what has to now be considered the Worst Plate of Pasta Alfredo in the history of plates. I'm not sure how you can screw up simple noodles and sauce that badly. You might think that the sauce was the problem, but the noodles... had this strange "container" taste to them (as if they'd absorbed the flavor of whatever cooking vessel they were originally in) that was actually amplified as the dish cooled off.

It totally killed my appetite -- I started off ravenous and now I don't even want to drink the rest of my Mountain Dew. I should market our cafeteria as a new diet plan.

    Review: American Ground

I have to admit that the first reason I wanted to read American Ground is from the story I'd read about looting during the Trade Center disaster. However, the rest of the book gave an extremely interesting view of the people behind the deconstruction of the ruins -- some of which was about as hazardous a job as underwater welding or working on the deck of an aircraft carrier. Langewiesche has taken some lumps for his unflattering depiction of FDNY -- at that time (and indeed now) they were considered demigods, and the author intimates that this was indeed of their own design. My only gripe is the book only clocks in about about 200 pages; there has to be more information, analysis, story and insight to fill three more books of this size. My guess is that the publisher put the rush on it.

Also, thanks to Eric for having it sent my way.

    Training is Almost Complete

Julie made a Grandmaster Flash reference yesterday. How great is that? Next thing you know she'll be busting out some Melle Mel or Sugar Hill Gang on us.

Well... at least the old one in our neighborhood. I watched the destruction equipment tear it down over the last few days -- yeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhh!

There was a lot of good football on this weekend. Yesterday, as I watched, I decided to assemble my new exercise bike, which went... OK, considering the swearing and such. Finding the allen wrenches (that weren't even referred to in the instructions) helped.

The problem is that the resistence knob, which allegedly makes it easier or harder to pedal, is not working properly; instead it is making horrible clicking noises and is very difficult to turn. Which means I'm going to have to disassemble part of it to try to find out what's wrong.

Caution: I Am Going To Trumpet My Own Achievements

I tied for best record in my Fantasy Football League this year. I didn't win the tiebreaker -- that goes to my man Donald -- but considering that I didn't have the world's greatest roster, I think I did a great job.
