Chapter 18: Models for Nonideal Reactors

Self Test 18.2: Other Scheme For Evaluation

The following (1-F) curve was obtained for a real rector.

It is desired to model the real reactor as a combination of two ideal reactors with parameters $\upsilon_{01} = b\upsilon_{0}$ and $V_{1} = aV$ where $V$ is the total reactor volume $\upsilon, dm^3, \textrm{and} \upsilon_{0}$ the volumetric flow rate in $dm^3/s$. Determine the model and the model parameters a and b.

(a) Two CSTRs in Series

(b) Two CSTRs in Parallel

(c) Two PFRs in Series

(d) Two PFRs in Parallel

(e) A CSTR and a PFR in Series

(f) A CSTR and a PFR in Parallel

Solution

First let's convert the (1-F) curve to an F curve

At t = t1 and t = t2 we see he slope   is infinite, i.e. E(t) = which suggests two PFRs in parallel
